Hi! I'm sooo excited! We got engaged while on holiday in Europe. It was beautiful, private and perfect. He's such a romantic when he wants to be!
Now we have a wedding to plan and I'm already overwhelmed! Does anyone have any tips, hints or suggestion about how to keep the budget from getting out of control!? I have always wanted to do a lot of things myself for my wedding... invitations, center pieces, decorations, cake, flowers etc... that might be too much, but I want to try to do as much as I can to keep costs low.
My sister got her wedding dress for $150 becuase the one she liked was discontinued and they were selling the sample. She looked amazing. I hope I am as lucky!
Please help! Any suggestions, websites or advice would be appreciated.

I can't help with the wedding dress part though, sorry. no experience on that lol

That's awesome, congrats!!! So exciting!
I think one of the reasons weddings get so expensive is that people just go way overboard! Keep it simple. Weddings go so loaded with over the topness, it's just unnecessary!
I would suggest doing some of the easier things yourself: maybe save the dates, invitations and centre pieces but don't stress yourself out with baking a cake or sewing a dress. Don't worry about cutting down on costs either. People are there to see YOU get married and to enjoy you and celebrate you. As long as there is an open bar and good food, you're golden ;)

My fiance is Irish... there is no such thing as an open bar in Ireland... it would be a disaster and the venue would definitely lose money! LOL
I have looked at a few venues and a lot include an open bar for a few hours. That seems reasonable.
To be honest we haven't even decided if we will get married in Canada or Ireland!
Thanks for the kind words and advice!

Hahah that's awesome!
One of the things I have seen couples do which seems smart is to do an open bar with limited beverage types (and no need for top shelf liquors) and also to have an open bar til like 12 or around then and then cash bar afterwards.

Patricia this is amazing news! So happy for you! Some things you can do to save money that I did for my own wedding:
Buy flowers in bulk and do the centre pieces yourself. I got tons of roses at $1 a stem and stuffed small vases full for each table at the reception surrounded by small vanilla scented candles. It was inexpensive and very pretty. I would leave the bouquets and ceremony flowers to the pros.
Either make your invitations yourself or get them done at a less traditional place. I went to essence du paper in Toronto and they created simple, beautiful invites for a fraction of the cost of traditional invites. I couldn't fathom spending thousands of dollars on something that would be tossed so soon after.
Instead of a thousand dollar wedding cake consider buying individual cakes from a bakery you like in 3 sizes (small medium and large) and have the caterer stack them like a wedding cake, then top with flowers. My cake was less than $100 and no one was any the wiser.
Good luck. So exciting!!

I was reading about doing flowers myself last night. There is a website that will send flower for pretty cheap. But I'll check local flower shops. I would love to do my own flowers.
I had planned to do my own invitations. We made my sisters with some cardstock and stamps and they looked pretty good. I just need to decide on the details to write them up! :)
That's a great idea about the cake. I don't think I'll have time to bake one myself so that's a great alternative! :) Thanks!
I have heard that anything that is specific for a "wedding" is far more expensive so I'm trying to stay away from traditional wedding suppliers and stores.
Thanks for all the hints! :) Keep 'em coming!

Well first off Congrats on getting engaged, not to the planning, my best friend is getting married next year and she has gotten so many ideas on do it yourself stuff for her wedding on www.pinterest.com there are so many pins that can give you great ideas for everything for the wedding. I would start they and see where it brings you, you may find other sites from there that can help you in other ideas. Good luck.

Michael's often puts out 50% off coupons. This is a great way to save money on things like Do-It-Yourself wedding invitations, favor boxes, and other crafty items. They sometimes put them in their flyers but it's easiest to sign up for their emails and print them.
