I know plenty of people who wanted something different. I know some who had a pearl or their birthstone, or a completely plain ring or a ring made of stacked diamonds vs one large one. Don't feel the need to conform. ;)

I love the idea of something completely different! Even the sapphire that Prince Will gave Kate (his mom's original engagement ring) was beautiful and different! I especially like the idea of a pearl or onyx! :)

I always tell my boyfriend I want mine to be a Hello Kitty ring ;)
The best one I've seen so far was about 12 years ago. I was working as a cashier and a man came through my cash with a BEAUTIFUL half-moon ring. I asked him about it and he said it was his wedding ring. He said his wife had the sun and that the rings locked together. I thought it was so romantic :)
A couple of my good friends got married a few years ago and both their rings are platinum and wood.
You have to wear it for life, so make sure you love it! :)

I've always loved colour! Lucky for me, the women in my family for 4 generations have had blue sapphire rings with diamonds as accents only. I kept this tradition. My ring looks nothing like an engagement ring. You have to get a ring that suits YOU.
Diamonds are stockpiled in vaults by the diamond companies to artificially control the supply and make them more 'valuable' than they are, anyway. The thing with diamonds is that they are uber-strong and durable. Nothing 'breaks' them.
If you want your engagement ring to last (if you never take it off like me), you have to go for a super durable stone - sapphire or ruby- its the next hardest level of precious stone (moh scale). Bonus - sapphire comes in every colour! And they are much rarer than diamonds.

I think a non-diamond engagement ring is a brilliant idea!!
@sirenstarlight - that sounds like such a nice ring and such a romantic couple! :-)
@tashcat - you are so right gf! I watched "black diamond" and apparently stuff like that really happen in real life! Crazy...and the worst part is we're funding it by our love of "rare" diamonds.
I think if you must go with a diamond, get a Canadian diamond so you're not supporting the baddies. Most of all, get a ring that you will love, because you'll have to wear it 'forever'.
|Wanted a twist tie on May 08, 2012 @ 07:09 pm|
I was (still am) so madly in love with my now husband that I didn't care if I had a garbage bag twist tie it is just symbolic of our love being never ending that's why it's a ring.
hubby did get me one of the most incredible rings I have ever laid my eyes on, I seen it in Edmonton and we live 5 hrs away, I used to work as a welder apprentice and worked 12 hr days and was away 14e hrs, he called in sick and drove to Edmonton and back to get my ring for me I think this is the most romantic thing I've heard of however it's also the most dangerous road so he should have just opted for the twist tie!
Its all about your preference it doesn't matter what it looks like its what it symbolizes. If he takes it upon himself to pick one out cherish it and love it I guess its really true it's the thought that counts.

One of my girlfriends has a sapphire engagement ring. Looks great on her!

I am not a huge fan of diamond rings, especially solitaires. I have always wanted a ring with sapphires, it's my birthstone. I have also really started to love the Black & white diamond combo, the contrast between the stones is gorgeous. Me and my boyfriend are getting to that point in our relationship that the next step is a ring, so we have been out looking at rings so I could give him a better idea of what I like and don't like. As much as the ring itself isn't really important, I will have to wear it for the rest of my life, so I want one that I like over one that is expensive and traditional.

I've never really been a fan of the traditional diamond ring. I much prefer something unique. I've also always loved the idea of buying antique or vintage rings, I find the styles so much more interesting. I also think going for another precious stone is a great idea; I've always been interested in pearl engagement rings.
