I suggest the XBOX , because it is the better value, not as expensive as the new play station. I think the XBOX is a better deal.

X-Box has Live connect that allows your child to download free games, play with others in real time and also serves as a DVD player for their movies. X-Box games are amazingly versatile in the range of games they offer, but most are geared towards tweens and teens.
Because of the wider popularity of X-Box, second hand games are very easily available for about $5-10.

With the kinect, the xbox tracks your movement, so you don't need extra controllers for movement games.

We have all the systems. I honestly think it depends on the age of your son. My older kids are 15 & 17 and the XBOX is great. But, for my younger two 7 & 9 I wouldn't suggest an XBOX due to the availability of the games. Xbox carries a bit more of a mature theme. I know there are more "friendly" titles out there but they are far and few.
