I have a stepson Billy I have known since he was 5 years old and now he is 19 years old. Billy just came to live with us about 2 years ago. I really feel for you because I know first hand how hard it is not only to deal with such a change but also dealing with the ex too. For me I know Billy has a mom so I never try to take her place in any way, But we do have rules for him to abide by while he is under our roof. In the last couple years I have had some hard times but so many more rewarding times. I have seen Billy get a job, get his drivers licence and now he is going to school for HVAC too, So I am so proud and happy that I helped and was a part of that change. Never being able to have children of my own of coarse I have made mistakes but with patience, understanding and respect which goes both ways it has been a life changing experience. I wish you the best of luck and just try to do the best you can that is all any one can ask. Don't feel you have to try to please too much because for me I did that at first and I think trying not so hard is when it all turned around. It will get better !

I was a stepmom for 5 years to a teenage boy. I also have my own 3 kids(13-19 now). I always felt like I was getting stuck in the middle or maybe being too nice, or too mean! Always a fine line. But always wanted to include the stepkids in family. Learning to blend a family is hard. Two sets of parents, two sets of rules...planning holidays were the worst.

I find it's so hard on the kids. My step kids are 3 and almost 2. They're mom gets mad for calling me mom or loving me. It breaks my heart.
