Blogger and WordPress are two that are very popular and super simple to use. In terms of customization, I think WordPress gives you more freedom. I use Blogger and I think their templates are all very similar - so when it comes to creating a blog from them, if you want to avoid making it a Blogger blog, you'll need play around in order to make it look "different" (hopefully that made sense). But if designing the blog isn't important and you're more about simply providing content for your readers, Blogger may be a right fit as it's straight to the point. Wordpress has a lot of different functions and buttons. It really depends on what you're comfortable with. Can't wait to check out your blog - keep me updated :)

I've been researching this also and this is what I've found out. If your blog is just going to be a pastime and you're doing it only as a hobby with no intention to profit from it, Blogger is a good option. If instead you would like to make an income from your blog, you need Wordpress, specifically Wordpress.org, not .com.
Wordpress.com offers a free blog option but the only way you can profit is through AdSense, I believe, whereas with .org you can include various avenues. You do, however, need to pay a monthly or yearly fee for Wordpress.org.
If you decide to go with Blogger or Wordpress.com and later on decide you want to switch over to Wordpress.org, there are ways to transfer your previous content over, but it might be a little more technical to carry out and I've read that some people have had trouble doing this. Personally, I would start directly with Wordpress.org, avoid the hassle and dive right into earning.

I would definitely start on WordPress. My blog is on Blogger, and I want to change, but it seems too difficult.

I've been trying to set up a blog as well. I started it on WordPress.com with the free functions. Kinda lost already and it's only been a few days

I use the open source WordPress.org installs which allow for virtually limitless possibilities.
If you want something really unique, but on a free CMS, it's how I would go.

Start with blogger, see if you keep at it.
If your intention is to create a good following you can do that through blogger, and you don't need much else.
If your intention is to make money, then you'll need to go the more expensive route, and use wordpress. You can use wordpress.com and see and learn how wordpress works, then if you want to bite the bullet and potentially make money from your site then, you'll need to go whole hog and typically pay for hosting a domain, etc.
So start at blogger.com or wordpress.com, see how much you enjoy it. If you stick with it, then invest more into it. I suggest go daddy for domains and hostgator for hosting.
