I've been to Hong Kong before (which is relatively easy to navigate even if you speak only English) but I venture into China for the first time next week. I am PUMPED for the hot weather, but am not sure what to expect otherwise in terms of local food choices, etc.
Has anyone ever been? Advice? I can't stress how excited I am to leave the snowbanks behind and trade up to some hot and humid weather.

Don't be deceived by the weather, even if it's cloudy, it's still hot. Shanghai has the best shopping (check out the silk museum), Beijing is the best place to climb the Great Wall, and Xian has the best heritage spot (Terra Cotta Warriors)

Take a good face scrub and maybe a good tissue face masque, it's so polluted and your skin shows it easily. It's important to scrub up at the end of every day to prevent some really gross acne (I learned the hard way)

I will be spending 3 days in Huizhou and I'm not at all familiar with the area - but it would be lovely to have some time to check out the sights and shopping! I hear there is great green tea in that particular area also.
My hair literally exploded about 2x its usual size when I visited Hong Kong in October 2014 - and I will prepare for the same this time around. Wash it, throw it up, and don't bother with much styling. As much as I love humidity, my hair doesn't enjoy it at all.
Thank you very much for the advise on the tissue face masque - I have 2 at home that I'm going to pack tonight. I didn't even think about the air effects on my skin!

Wow, never been to a place that was so polluted you honestly have to clean your face at the end of the day or you'll notice the pollution's effect on your skin. I live in a fairly industrial city, but I can still go at least a few days without washing my face and have no adverse effects.
Enjoy your trip! I wish I could get away somewhere. Not sure yet if I'd want that vacation to include my newborn son and my husband, or just have a spa retreat by myself :)

I could go for some hot, humid weather right now myself. Its my favourite, minus the melting makeup and bad hair lol
Hope you have a fun trip! Enjoy!

Thanks for all of the advice and well-wishes, ladies! It's been a very positive (and warm) experience so far. Trying to treat my skin well, though now on day 3 and I have a bit of a sore throat. Definitely not used to all of the smoking in public places.
@glumgumble - both getaways would be nice!! You could always incorporate a "me" day on a vacation with your famjam :)
@SnowWhite - Thanks!! I love warm weather so much, but leave it to me to be cold and still need to wear multiple layers :/

I'm the same way! Whenever someone says that it's so nice out, skip the jacket I make sure to bring it, or at the very least a sweater lol

I took a month long trip to China on a tour in 2007. The food choices truly depend where you are. Shanghai has everything, Beijing not as much etc.

Thanks again, ladies!! Got home safe and sound around 2am this morning, having a fun time getting my bearings on time zones. Back in the office today hoping a "regular" work day will shut off the major jet lag and lack of sleep. It was a great trip, I didn't have any troubles. Managed to fit in some fun hikes and touristy stuff, and lots of great food.
Today, aside from being sleepy...I miss the hot weather...will atlantic Canada ever see summer? :/
