Disneyland is in California, it is the original park created by Walt Disney. For this reason, it has a lot of the original rides and attractions (which have been updated) and is all contained in one park. There is a second park, California Adventure, which has Cars Land as well. Overall, there is a lot to do but you can do it in a shorter period of time and there are less attractions overall, however it is still great.
Disney World is in Florida and is made up of Four separate parks and a whole complex of resorts and shopping. It is far larger and contains the Magic Kingdom (which would be the closest equivalent to Disneyland), Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. It has multiple resorts and dining packages and should be done over a period of a week, rather than Disneyland which is do-able in three or four days. There is a lot more to it than that, but that's the basics. I would always do Disney World over Disneyland, but some people prefer it the other way. If you need any more information about the parks or planning a vacation, let me know.

I have no idea about the differences. All I can say is I've entered enough contests lately to win trips to Disneyland. If I get to go, I'll let you know.
