Bossypants by Tina Fey Reviews
#936 in Books

Description

Tina Fey’s new book Bossypants is short, messy, and impossibly funny. From her humble roots growing up in Pennsylvania to her days doing amateur improv in Chicago to her early sketches on Saturday Night Live, Fey gives us a fascinating glimpse behind the curtain of modern comedy with equal doses of wit, candor, and self-deprecation. Some of the funniest chapters feature the differences between male and female comedy writers ("men urinate in cups"), her cruise ship honeymoon ("it’s very Poseidon Adventure"), and advice about breastfeeding ("I had an obligation to my child to pretend to try"). But the chaos of Fey’s life is best detailed when she’s dividing her efforts equally between rehearsing her Sarah Palin impression, trying to get Oprah to appear on 30 Rock, and planning her daughter’s Peter Pan-themed birthday. Bossypants gets to the heart of why Tina Fey remains universally adored: she embodies the hectic, too-many-things-to-juggle lifestyle we all have, but instead of complaining about it, she can just laugh it off.

    Excellent read!

I love Tina Fey- she is hilarious so of course I love this book. It’s such a great book full of humour, words of wisdom and much more. I love all of her stories and her take on life. Must read for sure.

    Laugh out loud funny.

As the ladies previously said, this book is hilarious. I'm a huge fan of Tina Fey, as I find her to have a fun & quirky personality - and this book did not disappoint. Read this from start to finish in 2 days (& will read again).

I would highly recommend reading this!

Yes, as the other reviewer said you will laugh out loud when you read this book, or you'll be doing that weird silent nose laugh thing which is equally silly looking, especially if suddenly you snort-laugh some snot loose (not that I speak from experience).

This is the only autobiography I have read more than one chapter, so on the one hand I can't compare it to other bios. On the other hand, it's saying something that this autobiography-hater read this in 2 days and is still laughing about it months later!

Don't read this book in a public place such as a cafe or you will be the weirdo in the corner laughing out loud by yourself.

I bought this for some "Me Time" before baby arrives and I haven't been able to put it down. Before I started reading Bossypants, my Me Time consisted of polishing all of the floors in my house - and then redoing them, baking cookies with accidentally too much butter that smoked out my new oven, and interfering in business from my home office because who doesn't want to hear from their boss while she's on mat leave?

But then I realized this is really my only opportunity to be selfish and lazy for the foreseeable future and I should try to enjoy it. I read through Bossypants in 2 days and have never laughed so hard. It is the funniest book I have ever read. Fey has such a great self-deprecating humour. There are stories about how she started 30 Rock, her Sarah Palin skits for SNL, how she started her career, what it's like to be a working Mom and what life was like for her growing up. It is all spectacularly funny. I especially enjoyed the part where she responds to snarky comments made about her in different online forums such as, "Tina Fey is an ugly, pear-shaped, overrated troll." I won't tell you what she says but it's hysterical.

I don't know if she intends to write any more books but I really hope she does. Highly recommended.
