This is the first of the Prey books that John Sandford has written and was our introduction to his infamous Lieutenant Lucas Davenport. In this book Lucas is brought in to help find a killer after he has already murdered three of his victims. Lucas isn’t your average everyday cop. His colleagues find everything about the Lieutenant to be a little different and they’re right. To the computer games he invents and sells, the Porsche he drives to work, the quality of the woman he attracts, to his single-minded pursuit of justice that he has.
From the book: “This murderer was intelligent. He was a member of the bar. He derived rules based on professional examination of actual cases. His Rules: Never follow a discernible pattern. Never kill anyone you know. Never have a motive. Never carry a weapon after it has been used. Always beware of physical evidence. This killer had more Rules that he would build into a challenge. He was mad of Course… “ “The killer’s name is Louis Vullion, a low-key young attorney who under the camouflage of normalcy, reaches his next female victim until the pressure within him forces him to reach out and “collect” her.”
This book reaches out and grabs you right from the start. It leads you not only through this highly intelligent Lieutenants life, but through his pursuit of this killer that has; “His grip on the Twin Cities in a storm of terror more fierce than any Minnesota winter.” I have read just about every Prey book that John Sandford has written so far and haven’t been disappointed in any of them. If you enjoy a murder mystery, a fast read with a great story line then you’ll enjoy this book. Rule’s of Prey was John Sandfords first, but far from the last of his Prey book. Read Rule’s of Prey and you’ll be looking for the next Prey book in the series as soon as you have finished.
