The Joy of Cooking Reviews
#1102 in Books

Description

Seventy-five years ago, a St. Louis widow named Irma Rombauer took her life savings and self-published a book called The Joy of Cooking. Her daughter Marion tested recipes and made the illustrations, and they sold their mother-daughter project from Irma's apartment.

Today, nine revisions later, the Joy of Cooking -- selected by The New York Public Library as one of the 150 most important and influential books of the twentieth century -- has taught tens of millions of people to cook, helped feed and delight millions beyond that, answered countless kitchen and food questions, and averted many a cooking crisis.

This is one of my favourite books! If you love cooking and just food in general, it's great to have around. My mum always had a copy of it in the kitchen when I was growing up, and she gave it to me a few years ago. I also got the latest edition not too long ago, which is updated and has some more modern recipes and info.

I love how indepth it is, and how it gives you a few variations of the same type of recipes sometimes, as well as technical stuff and little tips and tricks. This book is where I look first when I want to try cooking something completely new to me or from scratch.

It isn't completely perfect (there are some recipes I've tried that I didn't like) but I'll always keep a copy of this around, because it's so helpful and most of the recipes are great. Plus it has so much info, it's also great for teaching yourself to cook without any recipes!
