Sophie Dupont assists her father in his studio. She falls in love with Wesley Overtree who has a reputation for being irresponsible. Capt. Stephen Overtree comes looking for his brother, Wesley, and discovers that Wesley has ran off to Italy leaving Sophie pregnant and alone. Stephen decides to propose to Sophie and save her from scandal. Sophie agrees and moves to Overtree Manor where she must pretend to be in love with Stephen and hide her feelings for Wesley.

Stephen falls more and more in love with Sophie but is called to battle Napoleon. In the meantime, Wesley returns to Overtree Manor and is shocked to discover Sophie carrying his child and married to his brother.

Julie Klassen has made me a fan of romantic historical fiction. She has a flair for bringing characters to life and giving them passion and emotion. I always wait with great anticipation for Klassen's next book, and I'm never disappointed.
