I am terrible at home manicures and in general I find they don't last nearly as long as the nail salon. The only thing I can think of is that at the nail salon, they paint the very top of your nail to finish it off, which seals in the polish. Do you know what I mean by that? Have you tried that? |

I *think* it's also because at the nail salon, they soak and than buff your nails a little. The surface is less 'shiny' and the rougher surface helps adhere to the polish more. I don't think that's healthy though.
Personally, i used to put on a lot of coats and thought that it would stay longer. The truth is, when i put more, they get thicker and crack easier. Try buffing you nails a little (Not too much, it's unhealthy) and then apply the nail polish directly (2 coats) and a very light top coat... Maybe that will work... |

mandyf, why do you think that buffing your nails too much is unhealthy? I am also always trying to improve my home manicures, I find them really hard to do too. What do you think of when they cut off your cuticles at nail salons? I heard that's unhygienic and bad for you. Do you let them do it? |

as a part timenail technician, I would recommend you to clean your nails with alcohol before you actually apply the polish on. Nail polish usually peel because your nail beds are oily so even the base coat can't stay on your nails.
Also, when I use a buffer, it's more so to buff the cuticles (before soaking) so we wouldn't have to trim your cuticles at all. Then I would lightly buff your nails just to smooth out your nails and get rid of any yellow stains and what not.
I don't usually cut the cuticles of my clients when they're getting a manicure. I would buff at most and push back then trim the hang nails that are sticking out. I never cut all their cuticles, it's bad for your shape and they definitely grow back alot worse.
Maybe I'm going all over the place here so I'll show you my technique and my manicures usually last more than a week without peeling :)
1. cut/file/shape nails
2. buffer cuticles and nails (more pressure on cuticles and lightly on the nails)
3. dab some cuticle softener (or hand soap works well also) surrounding your nails and cuticles
4. soak for about 3-4 mins
5. push back cuticles
6. trim hang nails on the side
7. wash hands and clean nails with alcohol (not polish remover because it aches your nails afterwards)
8. apply your base coat, 2 coats of polish and top coat (but after every coat, seal the top of your nails-- [paint across the top of your nails])
The sealing ensures that your polish shouldn't chip or peel.

I didn't mean the tips of nails, like filing, but i meant the nail beds like asiangoddess said. Because it's oily, it doesn't adhere as well.
