Fill a small bowl with a little bit water and a little bit of soap. Swirl your brush in the soapy water for a bit to remove all the make-up. If you haven't done it in awhile you might have a lot and might have to dump out the water and do it again. Keep doing that until it's clean. When drying the brush, lay it horizontally over the side of the sink. Many people will dry it standing with the bristles standing upward but the water will go down into the brush and may do something with the glue that's holding the bristles together so don't do that.
In terms of how frequently, I think someone once told me every week if you use it everyday? I don't know for sure though. I just do it whenever I feel like it. |

You can get a cleaning solution from MAC cosmetic counter. It is pink coloured.
You pour some of that in a cup then you dip your brushes in then run them through some water after.
I do this once a month to prevent bacteria build up!

I swish mine around in baby shampoo and water until the water runs clean. It's super cheap, doesn't leave a fragrance, and does the job.
Then I lay them flat on a towel to dry overnight. :)
I read that you should do this once a week for brushes you use for liquids and creams since bacteria likes the wet environment. |

I use baby shampoo as well. I usually soak in warm water with the shampoo for at least 10 minutes. Then I rinse with warm water. If foundation is still in the bristles I add a small dollop of the shampoo and work it through the brush. Rinse, squeeze water out while shaping it, and lay flat to dry on paper towel.
Giving your brushes a wash once a week is a good rule of thumb even if you don't use your brushes everyday. Depending on how you store your brushes, dust and other bacteria can accumulate on your brushes. |
