Though Vallier specializes in traditional feel good food like their famous Sheppard's pie and gourmet version of Mac 'n cheese, their burgers are extremely popular. Despite their $15 - $17 price tag. We quickly discovered why. My husband ordered a beef burger with gruyere cheese, served fries and salad that he said was one of the best he has ever had. I ordered the veggie "burger". This was no ordinary veggie burger since there was no patty. It is a large grilled portabello mushroom, smothered with a thick piece of Camembert (I think) cheese, a roasted beefstake tomato topped with arugula and an onion salsa. Served on the side was a generous arugula salad with a homemade tangy vinaigrette with shaved carrots and beets.
I don't think we spoke much during the meal. It was just that good.
The decor is a little kitchy and not quite as stylized as some of the other restaurants. It is all about the food and it is a favorite among locals.
