I have a funny story to go with my review. A few months ago I bought David Rocco's Dolce Vita cook book. I knew he was on the food network but had never seen him since we don't watch a lot of tv and have never bothered with cable. I bought the book because it it's gorgeous and filled with beautiful pictures and simple recipes using natural ingredients. It's a lifestyle cook book that talks about how they do it in Italy from cooking, to slowing down and enjoying life, to traditions like the neighborhood espresso bar. I reviewed it on ChickAdvisor and I recommend you check it out.

I'm kind of a freak about cafes. I am very particular about my espresso beverages and have been known to trek across the city to check out a new cafe. When Alex and I spotted ZAZA in Yorkville, we were debating if we should order another drink, since we had just finished lattes from Le Gourmand and I had just bought some flowers that needed to be put in water. We decided to go for it anyway. I'm so glad we did!

ZAZA is a traditional Italian espresso bar where you are encouraged to enjoy your espresso on the spot, with a glass of water on the side. There are a few high tables, but it's not like other cafes where you'll bring a book. The idea is you interact with other guests and take a few moments to enjoy a hot creamy espresso or a perfect cappuccino. The owner, Raffaele is a very happy guy. He was singing and dancing as he fixed our drinks.

They have a few tables set up outside where you can sit/stand and make new friends. There were a few older Italian gentleman and one guy who looked just like David Rocco. I mentioned to Raffaele that I just had to pop into his cafe after reading about this style of espresso bar in David Rocco's book, and that the guy outside looks just like him.

"Ya, that's him!" Apparently Raffaele and David grew up in the same town and are good friends. What are the chances? Naturally, I had to barge on over and introduce myself! One thing's forsure: If David Rocco approves of this place, I approve!

The espresso was delicious. Creamy, velvety and rich. I appreciate that they automatically serve water on the side as I always have to ask for that extra. The cafe is tiny, but it's the perfect spot for a hit of java while shopping. I recommend you enjoy your beverage in cafe Italian style vs. getting it to go for the true Dolce Vita experience. I will be back. A lot.
