While it may have some immediate aesthetically beneficial effects, people should know that cat litter has actually been proven to have some radioactive components. I first heard about this somewhat disturbing fact from my chemistry professor, and since then I've done a bit of research about it because I'm pre-med and very interested in things like this concerning health. The clay in it gives off enough gamma rays to set off detectors as a matter of fact.

Sure, there are naturally occurring radionuclides (a radioactive kind of atom or nucleus characterized by a specific number of protons and neutrons) in many common household items such as bananas even, but the thing I think worth pointing out here is that the incidence of cancer and the known effects (especially long-term) of radiation are serious enough to merit avoiding any avoidable sources of exposure to reduce the total impact over time.
