Beauty Myths: Fact or Farce?

Hi ladies,

I'm doing research for an article about those beauty fixes you hear about but aren't sure if they really work. I'm talking about things like putting whipping cream on a sunburn, egg white in your hair, toothpaste on your zit...

Can you help me out? I'd love to hear your stories of DIY beauty tips that work and those that went horribly wrong - the zanier the better, but I'll take it all!

Thanks in advance!

I have a couple of anecdotes..

- I once bought a bottle of organic olive oil (extra virgin). Obviously, its good for your skin so I went all out and put it all over my body...including my face. I kept doing that for two days until I started to notice small zits on my face which eventually bloated my face (think times two). After some research, I realized that some people are sensitive to oil substance on the face because it clogs your pores. I used cortate cream on my huge red itchy face for a whole week till it went back normal. Coincidentally, all my blemishes were gone for a whole month.

- At one point, I used a home recipe as a face cleanser. I used a concoction of egg white, avocado and milk on my face. I didn't realize how slippery the whole mixture was until I had it on my face..then it started dripping all over my face down to my body. The smell was horrible (raw eggs!!). It didn't do my face any good, but that may be because I stopped after one use!

I was once told that mushed up strawberries in your hair would lighten your colour and bring out the blond highlights... I don't know about lighter hair.... but there was a great mess in the bottom of the shower!! :)

I'm trying to think of more!

Mamaluv, are you going to go all "Mythbusters" on some of these suggestions and see if they work?

I think I'm scared!

LOL Patricia! I thought about testing some of these suggestions out myself (and maybe I will yet), but then I had to wonder if having a hideous allergic reaction or ruining my highlights was worth it. Hmmm. Not so much.

We'll see what others suggest! Certainly if I do try some of these, I will let you all know what comes of it!

Thanks for the suggestions so far, ladies! Keep 'em coming.

Strawberries and baking soda do work to lighten your teeth, but not so nice for your toothbrush.

Have done the mayo thing in the hair and it does work too. Eggs in hair - just make sure the water is not too hot.

Sugar and ground almond scrub is nice for the face, but again somewhat messy.

When I was a teen I put lemon juice in my hair and it turned it orange. This does not work if you have a lot of red pigment in your hair.

Jennifer - I tried the egg white rinse when I was in high school but didn't know to use cool water to get it out. I think it cooked a little. Man, that was gross! I've heard about mayo too; does your hair smell normal after rinsing? Also, would you use full fat mayo or can you use Miracle Whip?

Toothpaste on zits=worse thing ever
Made my acne worse and more painful and red. Don't do it!
