I have the infamous Beauty Blender as well as some other drugstore dupes, including the Real Techniques version. When I first tried the Beauty Blender, I loved it. I felt like it did a great job applying and blending my makeup, and I felt that it was worth the $20 price tag. Since then and since trying alternatives, I can't say I feel the same way. The Beauty Blender is made of a very unique material -- something that I haven't seen well-duped. Even so, I can't say the results are much different, if at all different, from the results of the other fancy makeup sponges. I mention the Beauty Blender solely because I know it has so many advocates. I prefer the shape and material (and price!) of the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge to all the others, Beauty Blender included. I find that it's the best at application, the most durable, the easiest to clean, and the most affordable.
All of that said, I'm not a huge fan of makeup sponges as a whole. They definitely make for a flawless face, but they're frustrating. I find that I can't go over the same spot twice; if the sponge touches a place that already has makeup on it, it will take the makeup off, which often results in a blotchy mess. Ew. I do use the sponge in a patting/pouncing motion and I do use it wet -- so those things aren't the issues.
I really prefer those small, cheap, cosmetic sponge wedges. I find that they're easier to work with, give me a nicer, more even finish, and are a lot more sanitary (you can just throw them away vs. washing the more expensive sponges).
