Black Nail Polish: Trendy or Trashy?

gymratski

I want to paint my nails black, but I'm not sure of the image it gives off.
I don't want to look hard and extreme like Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl, but more freshly fashionable while still looking like the girl next door like Serena.
Thoughts?

TRENDY AND CLASSY!

I LOVE wearing black nail polish and have been dying to buy a really good one that doesn't give any streaks.

I think black nail polish also looks better with shorter nails, unlike in the picture you posted...that look a bit too gothy for me. And your outfit definitely sets the vibes your nailpolish gives off as well. If you think black might be a bit too much, try a really dark-almost-black purple/blue/maroon that you can only tell is colored if you look closely. :)

a trendy classic

jchang said it all! I totally agree. J

oe Fresh has a great deep intense plum colour (called prune) that looks almost black but has a hint of colour. It might work for you. :)

Me too!

I also love a dark vampy colour but would personally go for a deep blackish plum, navy or brown on short nails.

Gray

I saw this girl on the subway yesterday sporting short nails, and shiny gray nailpolish. It actually looked amazing and I'd love to try it!

I personally love dark colours like black, purple, blue, etc.

grey is really hot right now

I agree with Jen that you need short nails to pull off black, and it's still a cute look.

But right now, greys are really fashionable

Mauve- and mushroom-greys...

... are a huge trend right now! I am currently lusting for one like this:

This is 'Paradoxal' by Chanel, but I don't normally spend $40 on nail polish so I guess I'm in the market for a knockoff...

ooh

That Chanel colour is fantastic! If anyone knows a similar one (at a fraction of the cost) please share!

Revlon Perplex

I have been Googling around and found Revlon 'Perplex':

From what I've read, it looks like this just might be the best of the knockoffs and if you can find it stocked it should only set you back around $5 or so!
