Fashion Hit or Miss: Pregnant Charlotte Gainsbourg goes sheer at Cannes

on May 19, 2011 @ 09:44 am

Uhhhhh, what do you guys think? Can a gal do a sheer dress when pregnant?

There's no doubt she is beautiful, and she does like fashion risks, but is this just too much for such a formal, black-tie event?

Oh god. on May 19, 2011 @ 09:51 am

I don't know what she is going for here but elegant did not come to my mind at all. It looks sloppy to me and I don't think it's appropriate for a black-tie event especially since she's pregnant.

absolutely not on May 19, 2011 @ 10:01 am

First off, I just want to say how much I dislike this dress overall. It looks like a negligee robe or something, and is just not attractive--pregnant or no. The black colour washes out her skin, and while her hair seems to have a nice ombre colour going on, it's not even up to the standard of bedroom-hair sexy. It just looks like she let it air dry straight out of the shower and didn't style it at all.

I'm all for taking fashion risks, but there's a fine line called "within the realms of good taste". I think a little peekaboo sheer could have worked in a different style, but the top here is fully sheer and just doesn't work for me. Compare this to Demi Moore's infamous naked cover on Vanity Fair - there she still looked maternal and like she was celebrating the beauty of the pregnant form. I liked it from an artistic standpoint. This doesn't look maternal or even beautiful; it's just a hot mess.

Can you tell that this is just a no-go for me on every level? Not trying to sound catty, I just really really dislike this whole look from top to bottom.

Dress does look like something you'd wear to bed on May 19, 2011 @ 10:04 am

@mamaluv totally agree! I think it looks kind of Pirate-ish... maybe she should've worn it to the Pirates of the Caribbean premier instead? ;)

Kirsten Dunst on May 19, 2011 @ 10:12 am

What do you guys think of Kirsten Dunst's (her co-star) ensemble? I really don't like it either!

One's a pirate, the other's a polka-dotted mermaid. Peter Pan, anyone?

I love C.G but... on May 19, 2011 @ 10:17 am

Poor doll. It's a bathrobe. She probably put it on to do her makeup and then left the house forgetting to put on the dress she meant to wear. It's the only logical explanation.

I like K.D's dress on May 19, 2011 @ 10:27 am

I think it's kind of fabulous!

K.D.'s dress on May 19, 2011 @ 10:38 am

hahaha @mamaluv, the Pirate and the Mermaid!

I think there's aspects of Kirsten's dress I like, it's a very Old Hollywood style, very glam. I even don't mind the green bodice and completely different fabric body, however, why are the dots on the upper part bigger than the ones on the skirt? It's just a slight difference, but makes it look as though they've been stretched out up there? Weird. Also, don't like that the hem is another fabric all together. Would like it better if there was one fabric (green) on the bodice and only one other fabric for the rest. She wore a gorgeous Chloe dress earlier though... love it!

agree x3 on May 19, 2011 @ 11:05 am

@Siofan, I absolutely agree with you. First, the Chloe dress was really amazing - what's not to love! And 2nd/3rd, the idea of the mermaid dress is nice and I like the green crisscross too but agree that the polka-dot size and the mismatched hem just kind of ruin it for me. I love the silhouette, but as a single piece of fabric (ie. the hem should not be there - it should have just been tailored to the same line) and without the dots it would have made the dress a win for me.

Oh my... on May 19, 2011 @ 11:19 am

I totally agree with mamaluv in that Charlotte just looks like a mess. Her hair is sloppy and the top and bottom don't even seem like they go together. And for such a formal event, she could have at least tried to make it look like she put a little more effort into everything. I don't like this look at all. And is she wearing camo shoes?!

As for Kirsten Dunst, I don't like her dress either. The different sized polka-dots are all I see. And it's making a very lame attempt at being a mermaid cut dress. Plus her eyes are too dark. She looks a little too fair here to be in such heavy black make-up all over her eyes. I find the colour of the dress and the dark make-up is aging her. The second picture that Siofan posted is way more her colouring!

Ok, I felt like that was all really mean! So I'll say something I do like about each. I like Kirsten's... earrings. I like Charlotte's....... err..... ummmm......................... *crickets chirp*

Agree with mamaluv! on May 19, 2011 @ 11:32 am

Charlotte is just SLOPPY. I'm not sure what to think of that dress!

Kirsten Dunst's dress is an OKAY. The green does somewhat look alright, but...I'm not quite sure if I'm quite there yet with the polka dots...or the flare at the bottom...

that is one heck of a gorgeous dress! Yellow is a good look on her!
