Just average

on Apr 02, 2008 @ 12:09 am

The other day I went to the mall to find some new pants for work. I ended up shopping in New York & Co. (http://www.newyorkandcompany.com/nyco/). I immediately liked what I was seeing b/c their pants are divided/sized for people of different heights. But I got a kick out of their chosen words for the labeling of these different sizes: Tall (self-explanatory); Petite (all the shorties like me); and for all the ladies in between, you all are just "Average"! Couldn't they have chosen a less demeaning descriptor? Hahhaha, average.

Average = mean on Apr 02, 2008 @ 12:24 am

Its a math term. It means the most popular. I don't see it offensive.

I think they could have done a better job with this. To a woman "average" = ubiquitous i.e nothing special. None of us like to see ourselves that way.

Yes, I know what average means. And while thinking of other terms that could have been used, 'mean' came to mind. 'Mean' would be even worse than 'Average', I think. Even 'Regular' or 'Normal' would be better. Or just no descriptor at all for those that aren't Tall or Petite.

When you try to think of alternatives for it, it's hard so it's understandable they'd just use "average". I don't really find that to be offensive or anything though; like hunter said it's just a mathematical term, it makes sense to use it.

geeks vs. the world on Apr 05, 2008 @ 03:27 pm

Math geeks (and I certainly fall into that category) would immediately see the logic behind the term and think little of any negative association. Fashionistas or those who are perhaps a little self-conscious would not appreciate an 'average' descriptor. It is, as MC suggests, a very plain-Jane term that isn't flattering (although I agree, it isn't offensive per se). I think of some of the clever marketing I've seen elsewhere - Old Navy comes to mind with their new line of jeans: The Flirt, The Diva, The Sweetheart, and The Goddess. Sooooo much more personality and flair than ultra low rise (aka hot babes at the bar), low rise (aka neighborhood cutie), mid rise (aka average shmuck) and high rise (aka mom jeans). Average?? Come on, a little imagination please.

Mamaluv I agree with you. average shmuck.... LOL!!!

I don't find the word really offensive. But I guess they just couldn't come up with a better word.

I'm sure if they came up with a better word they would sell a lot more clothes!

not made for people on Apr 16, 2008 @ 05:56 pm

if I ever have a clothing store I'm just going to separate everything cynically by "symmetrical people" and "humans". I'd like one day to find sleeves that go to my wrists without going up two sizes, and pants that go to my ankles without also going up to my breasts. And I would love to find a pair of shoes that come in irregular sizes.

I don't like it on Apr 16, 2008 @ 06:28 pm

Ya. Peeps don't want to be called average. Great job marketing team!
