I am looking to invest in a good black pump that I can wear in professional settings, but the more I research I am not sure how high my heel can go before it passes out of the office appropriate range. My personal style is pretty conservative as is the place where I work, but I am 5' 1" and I would love to be able to give myself a lift. Any thoughts on what makes shoes more appropriate than others?

I think any height of heel would look appropriate when paired with an appropriate outfit. If you are wearing a short skirt, and 5 inch heels - it might look a little riskay. But, if you had a high stiletto heel with a cute pencil skirt and blazer - it would look incredible, and still business like.
That's just my opinion!
Oh! & I think it might also depend on the shoe as well. Keep it simple, like all black - etc.

I totally agree with @katelynrose1984, I think it depends on the outfit you wear with it. I think the most important thing is to make sure the amount of skin shown and covered and in proportion. So a high heel needs more leg covered and a lower heel you can get away with a shorter skirt. For work I would suggest a kitten heel too so that you are more comfortable.

Agreed, it depends what you wear it with! I'm a shoe fanatic, and being 5"1 also, most of my hells are 5 inches. But if you wear them with pants or a long skirt or dress, you won't have an issue with looking scandalous.
Invest in a good pair of plain black pumps, they're an office staple. But, if you're like me and are obsessed with shoes and have a lot of bold pair, you can still wear them to work, as long as they're with an office-appropriate outfit that goes with the shoe. Ex. 6.5in leopard pumps might seem too much for the office, but pair them with long black trousers and navy blouse, and you're good to go!
(However if you're not used to wearing really high heels, wear something in the 3inch range because it'll be more comfortable. A lifetime of wearing super-high heels has made my feet numb to the pain though, so I have no troubles!)

I typically say 4" is a good height for the office but as the other gals said it depends on your outfit. If you wear an elegant pencil skirt you may be able to slide with 5" but no higher. I live in Atlanta where tact and professionalism is hard to come by and one day started a trend accidently by wearing 5" platform heels (not the stripper kind lol) with fitted capris and a dressy top. A style more widely worn at the time in my home city NYC. Good luck!

As the girls above mentioned, the height doesn't really matter, just make sure you choose something that is appropriate with your outfit. Don't go wearing your going out / party shoes at the office. :S
I used to work with a girl who wore stripper shoes ALL THE TIME! She said it was to make her feel taller... good thing we had work uniforms and it was only after her shifts... :S
