On a recent overnight trip to Winnipeg my husband picked me up a treat. Sadly, he ate the chocolate shell and only brought me the egg toy inside! :-( In any event, he brought me what remained of a Kinder Egg! I've never heard of them down here in the States. Are they big in Canada or is it just a coincidence that he found some in Winnipeg?

Oh that's so cute and so funny! Kinder Eggs are everywhere here. They are from the Kinder, the same people who make Bueno & Ferrero Rocher.
They basically have us addicted to chocolate from a young age with Kinder, then Bueno and Ferrero Rocher. I pig out on Ferrero Rocher's every Christmas. It's a family tradition. Every year I tell myself I'll hold back this year, but I always fail. Looking forward to it!
I did a write up on Bueno here:

These are HUGE in Europe, and Winnipeg has a strong German subculture. There are many European delicacies available there that I've tried in vain to find in the Southeast US - but where I'm living there isn't much multicultural-ness. I have yet to meet anyone here who has/had relatives come from "the old country"!
To answer your question, it's no coincidence at all. Just happens to be a market for that kind of thing! I imagine the same would be true in the multicultural pockets in any large city.
|It's all about the Kinder Toys ... and the chocolate! on Oct 31, 2008 @ 05:13 pm|
I used to love Kinder Eggs when I was a child. My friend would collect
all of the toys. I tried to collect them too, but I kept on getting the
same toys each time :p. They were so fun to build!
I just liked the chocolate, with the milk chocolate on the outside, white chocolate on the inside. It was marvelous...! MmmMmmmm
I grew up in the 90s in suburban Toronto. They were the "it" thing at
one point, every kid would go to the convenience store during lunch or
after school to grab a Kinder Surprise!

I love Kinder Eggs! They're especially big around Easter and Christmas around here. Kinder usually produces really large Kinder Eggs at those times with larger toys inside.
Kinder Joys are my favourite! They come in a plastic shell, one side has the toy and the other is creamy white chocolate with two Ferrero Rocher type chocolates that you eat with a spoon. Sadly I can't find the Joys in Winnipeg, they had them in Europe when I was there about 5 years ago.

I was in NYC for about a month and half last year and they told me the same thing. It's not very common in the states, I don't know if they have it at all. One person told me when she went across the border (she used to live in Michigan) they'd get Kinder Eggs because they were so cool. So I guess they aren't common in the states?

Oooohhh...I can't believe I missed this Kinder Egg discussion!
I love Kinder Eggs but I buy Kinder Eggs for the surprise inside and not the chocolate. I don't like the chocolate actually... :P I know the toys are cheap but sometimes you get really cool ones!!
I haven't bought a large Kinder Egg yet. I doubt the toys would be as cute as the mini ones and I wouldn't know what to do with all that chocolate. :P

chrischick, I used to have a whole collection of the toys too and I put them on my computer desk. When I moved out of my parents' house, I had to get rid of them; I was so sad!!
The little orange shell (inside the chocolate egg, containing the toy) makes great cat toy too! My friend's cat was crazy about those little orange eggs.
