Forced to be Fat

Ali de Bold

I came across this article on Marie Claire about the force feeding of young women that is going on in Mauritania. It's horrifying. It just shows how a skewed body image can go the other way too. It's so sad.

yes, I've seen this too

It's the flip side - a large wife proves the man can provide. It's a sign of his wealth that she can be so big. The force feeders get a bonus if they can produce stretch marks on the girls - the ultimate sign of beautifully big.

I can't remember where I read that: Time Magazine? A reputable source, in any case. Very very sad.

recent history

Perhaps not to such extreme, but it was common just several hundred years ago for a woman's plumpness to be a sign of her wealth and class status. If she was plump she was well cared for, likely did not work, and had nice provisions. It was the skinny/thin women who were poor laborers.

strange customs

They are probably so accustomed to this belief that the women believe it to be normal and fine. How about that other african culture, don't remember where exactly.... they believe a woman's neck should be extremely long. They make their women wear these metal bands around their necks which stretch them out freakishly
