Hi ,

I have been reading up on Keto diet, which is Low carb and high fat diet. Has anyone tried it and what are your thoughts.
Did you see any results ?

I did it last summer and fall to lose weight for my wedding. I absolutely loved it, it worked really well. The results were really great (I lost 26 pounds overall) and it didn't take long - only 2 or 3 months. The best part about it was, when I went on my honeymoon I indulged like crazy in all these foods I had cut out, and when I got back home, I found out that I had actually lost weight doing it!

My doctor actually recommended the diet to me, and she explained that it basically re-sets your internal scale to where it should be. For example, I weighed around 230 pounds, but since I've started the diet, I find it really hard to put weight back on, because my body realizes it functions better around 205.

PS

If you want a really good website to get helpful hints, recipes, and research, try dietdoctor.com - that's where I got all my info, and the recipes are delicious!

It works well IMO!

I've been doing Keto/Low Carb/Paleo off and on for years. I guess now it's basically my way of living with a little cheating here and there.

When I first did it I saw major results!! I do stress though, you still need to watch calories to lose weight. Fats are high in calories.

That being said, I find it's really easy to stick to! I don't really miss the carbs, and on weekends I will allow myself some and I won't gain weight.

Great to know

I was also curious about it. I felt that it could cause hypoglycemia but i guess if you follow it closely it could work.

Why do people fall for dangerous unhealthy diets and never go see a Registered Dietitian :(((

danayyc - if you read my comment, you would have seen that my family doctor, who I’ve been going to see for years, is the one who recommended going ketogenic. I didn’t fall for anything. I did due diligence and researched it fully before jumping in. The lifestyle wouldn’t be recommended for just anyone, but because my doctor knows me and knows how much trouble I have had with my weight for YEARS, she knew it would make a positive difference. She has also seen Type 2 diabetes be entirely reversed in some of her patients that have made the decision to eat ketogenic. That’s incredible for those people! It has a huge range of health benefits for multiple different demographics, diseases, and health struggles. It’s not like my doctor recommended I go swallow some trendy diet pills - Keto is a ton of work compared to that.

I hope it doesn’t seem like I’m trying to come after you, but I feel that there is a lot of misinformation out there about this lifestyle and I wanted to clarify my stance on it. :)

@EmiliaAnne I did see you went to the dr.....the sad thing is doctors have VERY limited education in nutrition. The only properly educated people in nutrition are Registered Dietitians. People go to their doctors with a lot of things - ie back pain. A doctor will very likely give a prescription for a pain killer, while if the same person goes to see a physio, they can get better long term and with no meds (people rarely realize physios have more education than doctors....). Same applies to RDs...they simply know more than a Dr.
I am sure your doctor is wonderful, I have an amazing family dr myself, but there are things that I trust the specialists more than a generalist...I am glad this diet worked for you and fingers crossed you won't see any adverse effect 20-30 years from now. Health is a precious gift :)

Thanks

Thanks @EmiliaAnne
I want to lose about 15 pounds in 2 months and I’ll give this a try.
Really if you read on it and follow it, it’s basically cutting down a lot of junk we eat unnecessarily. It allows you to follow a healthy lifestyle and being conscious of what we consume.
