Oil Pulling


Hi Ladies, has anyone out there been trying oil pulling (i.e. taking 1-2 tablespoons of coconut or sesame oil and lightly swooshing it around your mouth for 10-15 mins. I have been doing it for a few months and it feels great on my teeth and seeing some results, just seeing if anyone else out there is doing it.

I've never heard of this.

What is the purpose? Like, what benefit do you get from it? What kind of results?

It is an old Ayurvedic medical practice. The gentle swooshing of the oil is supposed to release toxins in the body by drawing them out through the mouth. It also helps reduce plaque, some studies have shown it to be just as effective as mouthwash, without the alcohol and other substances in mouthwash. Although, I do not rely on it solely for my oral care, it compliments daily teeth brushing and flossing.

Thanks for the response. Sounds quite interesting. It sounds like a lot of "work" are the complimentary benefits worth it? If so, I may try it :)

I have seen some benefits over 4 months of use; my teeth feel cleaner, my teeth are naturally brightening a bit and it is much easier to floss. It is hard at first to not gag while oil puling, but you get used to it after awhile. I don't use more than 2 teaspoons of oil each time. Oh and dispose of the oil in the garbage, not the sink.
