Ultrasound at 5 weeks showed nothing

Hi, I'm really scared and hoping for some advice from someone who has been here.  I had an ultrasound on Tuesday both transvaginal and the other kind and they couldn't see anything.  No sac, no fetal pole, no nothing.  Based on my last period, the Dr. estimates me at 5.5 weeks, but based on when I know I conceived it was 3.5 weeks ago.

I had a miscarriage earlier this year and I'm worried it will happen again.  The Doctor told me there is a 50-50 chance the pregnancy didn't take.  Has anyone else had this happen?  I had a blood test on Monday and my hcg levels were around 400.  I have no idea if this is normal, and I'm so afraid I'm going to miscarry again.  I'm not bleeding at all and I do feel pregnant but finding out they didn't see anything today is devastating and I'm really scared.  Has anyone been here before? Does this sound normal?

Too early?

I'm sorry you are going through this. I know how nerve-wracking waiting can be when there's a chance of bad news. I looked into this a bit and it looks like it could just be too early to tell. 5 weeks according to the way Dr.s measure it, is actually more like 3 weeks. At 3 weeks, there's not a lot to see. Even at 5 weeks since inception, they often can't see anything. See what the blood results show and try to get another ultrasound in a couple of weeks. At that point they should know forsure one way or another. Big Hugs!!

Anon, did everything turn out ok? I had the same thing as you where the ultrasound revealed nothing at 5 weeks and I was freaking out. I went back at 7 weeks and everything was so fine, I saw the tiny heartbeat and everything. It really set my mind at ease. My Doctor told me given how low my hormone levels were initially, it makes perfect sense why they couldn't see anything but now things are great. I hope the same for you!

It's all good

Everything turned out to be fine, thankfully. It was as you said - too early to see anything the first time. Thank you for your helpful comments, ladies! It really put my mind at ease.

your timing vs. the doctor's timing

Doctors always calculate from the point of the start of your last period, since that's the last day they can say with some confidence that you WEREN'T pregnant. Obviously, sometimes that's wrong because some women have period-like spotting and therefore the dates are totally messed up.

If your doc says you're 4-5 weeks, chances are you're probably closer to 2-3 weeks along since your most fertile time starts at about 2 weeks after the onset of your last period.

If that's so, then it's not abnormal to have difficulty detecting a fetus. Unfortunately all you can do is wait another 4 weeks or so and then have the tests redone. At 6 weeks pregnancy, they should be able to see something on their machines.

Too early to panic

Anonymous, I had the exact same thing happen with my son. He is now almost a year and a half. It was just too early at that point to see anything. Go back in a few weeks and hopefully everything will be ok. Big hugs!
