Vegan Cheese? Lactose Intolerant...

on Feb 05, 2015 @ 02:53 pm

Unfortunately I am one of those that can not handle dairy. I'm not on any special paleo or dairy-free meal plan, but rather my body just can not tolerate it. Goodbye soft-serve ice cream, goodbye diner milkshakes, and goodbye cheesy pizzas and grilled cheeses...I know, it's really no fun.

BUT I've been noticing recently that restaurants keep popping up with the option of switching the meal to vegan cheese, like Pizza Nova and Mama's Pizza. This has given me and all my dairy-free sistas hope!!

I've never tried it as I'm a little hesitant. Can this be true??
Have any of you tried vegan cheese? Does anyone know what it's even made from?!

Have you tried Lactaid? on Feb 06, 2015 @ 12:43 pm

I have trouble breaking down milk products and am not lactose intolerant. I use Lactaid, and it really helps.

What about goat cheese? on Feb 06, 2015 @ 04:51 pm

It supposed to be better for your digestive system. Vegan cheese is usually made from soy. I have tried it... It looks like cheese but the taste is a little off. It's definitely not regular cheese. I got turned off by the texture. I'm not a big fan of it.

How noticeable? on Feb 09, 2015 @ 03:49 pm

Oh no really, @Cy73?! How noticeable is the difference? Does it have that gooey texture like cheese when melted?
That's a little disappointing it isn't as great :(

Vegan cheese... on Feb 09, 2015 @ 04:14 pm

For one, the vegan cheese doesn't melt like regular cheese. You will be so disappointed by that. It don't think it even melts. I had a product by Yves and it looked like Swiss cheese with the holes. It was just cheese-like but not the real thing. Just taste it and you will either love it or hate it. I knew it was just not for me. It was gross in taste and texture. Not a lot of flavour to it either.

Daiya cheese shreds are pretty good and melt well. Probably the best dairy free alternative you can find. You should give them a try, I really like them!

I'll try that one out! I've seen it in some grocery stores but never trusted it, so I'll have to put it to the test. Thank you very much :)
