What do you do to "stay regular"?

Hi guys, sorry for the TMI (in advance)!  I've tried everything from prune juice to Benefiber to yogurt but have problems with regularity.  Anyone have any ideas?  I've struggled with this for years:(

chineese herbal tea

Drink a cup of Chinese herbal laxative tea before going to bed and you'll be going in the morning. You can get this pretty much in any Chinese store.

water water water!!!

I'm sure you've heard this before but its so true. I have a problem with being regular sometimes so bad I haven't gone for 4 days! Sometimes even longer which scares me because I know this is not healthy and over time can cause some huge health problems. It takes a good two days to work so most people might get discouraged and think it's not working so they stop drinking so much water and start trying other things or continue to the way they use to eat and drink. At the end of the two days of drinking nothing but water with some fresh squeezed lemon juice in it, I am so regular and I start to feel great! I have so much energy and I don't feel sluggish anymore. I was so constipated for so long that I ended up doing something I never would have done out of desperation, I hate to take any kind of medicine or stimulants, but I ended up trying a stimulant tea that had good reviews, and the results were pretty bad. It didn't work at all I was still constipated but I had real bad cramping from the tea trying to stimulate and it hurts pretty bad. I decided to just drink nothing but water and had no results for two days and was about to give up until the end of that second day and I was regular! I continued drinking water and I have a movement everyday sometimes more in a day. I've heard it before, but I truly do believe it now water is like magic and we don't even know it. We always turn to something else to help our bodies, but water does work wonders. I had been constipated for almost a week and as soon as i started drinking water I was regular. Also watch your diet, eat some more fiber and drink plenty of water to help the fiber do its job. hope this helps! goodluck

Senna leaf

pastrychefchick is right you need to drink lots of water and while its hot like this a wedge of lemon in the water does make it taste good and works wonders...Lots of fruit cherries, mango's,plums etc.If its really really bad go to your health food store and get Pure Senna leaf it will be cheaper then buying laxative tea or laxative mix.Senna is usually the main ingredients in those health food teas etc.Much cheaper and better to buy straight Senna Leaf.Just stay close to your toilet!Take at night before going to bed(steep in hot water to make a tea)I guarantee it will work!

good suggestions....

One more thing you may want to look into is your diet as a whole....
If you aren't putting good stuff in your body, you are going to have problems on the other end too!!!

I generally just eat tons of veggies/fruits and drink lots of water (like what pastrychefchick said). Try fruits with 'fibre' benefits, such as blueberries! A coffee in the morning should also help with irregularity.

Also, in the case of irregularity, I find that diet is the number one influence! Of course hormones may cause changes in how regular you are, but if you keep a constant healthy diet, then it really helps!

You can use things like special teas or pills, but nothing is as good as eating right because it will help in the long run :)

Good luck!

Drinking lots and lots of water is the best thing to do. If you don't drink a lot of water on a regular basis, it may take a few days for your body to adjust before its benefits can be detected.

I never had problems until I got pregnant and my hormones are screwing up my body. Now, I have to drink a glass of metamucil once a day to stay regular. I usually add 1 big round teaspoon of metamucil (which is actually closer to 1 tbsp) to a small amount of water, dissolve it and then top up the glass with more water or orange juice. The water is better for you because OJ has a lot of sugar, but when you have to drink metamucil day after day, it gets a bit gross and the OJ is a treat. After a big glass of metamucil, I usually try to follow it by 1/2 glass of water and then another 1/2 glass of water when I get into work. In totally, I probably get about 1.5-2L liquids every morning. If you don't drink enough liquids with the metamucil, it can actually cause constipation!!

I hear dairy products can cause constipation, so I'd lay off the dairies if I were you. Not cut it out completely because you need the calcium but just don't over-do it.

Eat lots of leafy greens and include more fibre in your diet in general.

Are you on iron supplements? Iron supplements can also cause these problems.

You said you've been struggling for years. Have you talked to a doctor? Perhaps you need to a referal to a dietician.

thanks guys!

I do eat a ton of fiber - only whole grain bread, brown rice, ww pasta, etc. I have also been more disciplined about drinking water (with lemon - yesss!) in the past and need to get back in the habit because you're right, it does work.

I have also heard that dairy and bananas constipate - too bad b/c I love that! yogurt is my treat b/c I'm trying to lose 5 pounds and want to have a healthy and lowish fat snack option. I'm also on iron, so the deck is stacked against me!

thanks for all your suggestions, I'm going to try them dutifully and will let you know!

Yep, I'm going to check into that too. I've asked different docs before and heard generally that anything between 2x/day to 2x/week is "normal". So I suppose I'm still "normal" on the long side of that range (and sometimes longer), but I just feel sluggish and when I do have periods of daily relief I feel so much better!

riped bananas

I think if the bananas are ripe, it relieves with constipation but if it's raw, it makes constipation worse. I read that on websites that talks about feeding babies solids. I don't know how true it is but I always wait until the bananas have brown spots before giving it my son. Just in case...

I also think regular exercise helps too, to get the bowels moving.

Fibre for Regularity

Honestly I think it's a healthy diet, regular routine of working out. Fibre, lots of bananas, there are stool softeners you can take and what not to help your little problem out because I know it sucks being bloated an unable to well do anything about it.
