it varies

While every person has different expectations, or however timing works out (waiting for out-of-towners to come in, for example), one piece of advice I will give you is to do both the photos and the shower during your 2nd trimester.

Your 3rd trimester (starts at 28 weeks) will not be ideal because this will be when you will be gaining weight faster than before and may have some water retention that can swell your feet, hands, and face. You'll be more tired, and depending on your situation, may even go into labour! Obviously, not the best time to have pictures taken.

I always felt best during my 2nd trimester. You're still cute-pregnant (as opposed to bulky pregnant), have lots of energy, and are generally in a good mood. This is the time to have parties and be around people. Consider too that this is when you'll be prepping your nursery, so it's great timing to be receiving some of the staples and big ticket items that typically come at showers.

Again, everyone is different and has reasons for wanting to do things sooner or later. Do whatever you feel you can handle. The most important thing is to manage your stress during pregnancy. Ideally, this should be a happy time (as well as your last few months of childlessness. Trust me: during those 2am feedings you'll miss these moments :)

Good luck, and congratulations! You're going to love being a mom!

2nd or 3rd trimester

Usually both are done in the 2nd or 3rd trimester. Early in the 3rd is probably when you will have your best bump and still have the energy for a baby shower. Some people also do baby showers after the birth, but you will be exhausted. I think it's more fun to do the shower before the baby comes as it's one more thing to be excited about while you are still sleeping.
