fired over a timbit

Ali de Bold

Did you guys hear about this? At first I thought the employee was fired because maybe the child was too young for a timbit (choking hazard or something) but then I found out it was because she gave the child the timbit for free. Are you kidding me????

Yeah! I read that and I was horrified!! I almost boycotted Tim's for the day...almost...but then I forgot about it and went to Tim's for a snack later on in the day. Anyhow, I'm glad she stood up for herself and got her job back. It's not like she was giving away a whole sandwich to freeloaders. It's just a baby and the timbits are like $0.15!! Tim's obviously had no right to fire her and they would've gotten away with it if she didn't go to the media.

It's still irresponsible behaviour, I think..

..and illegal, to give any food, no matter how cheap, for free to kids/babies if it's not part of company policy. I think that Tim Hortons had a right to exercise discipline in that regard. But yes, firing instead of a warning is way too harsh.

company policy

I don't think it was company policy to fire someone for giving away food, esp. without warning. That's probably the only reason why she was given her job back. Tim's acknowledged the fact that while she was wrong to give food away, it wasn't policy to fire her either. It sounds like her manager just didn't like her and took the disciplinary action too far. Either way, I'm glad she got her job back. I can't imagine how hard life must be if she's working at Tim's and supporting 4 children at the same time.

Is the issue giving away to food for free or giving food to a baby? Was the Mom or Dad not there to ask if it was ok to give the baby the timbit!? Because if it is giving away food for free, I know that Tim Hortons gives timbits to people with dogs ALL the time! But if it's the matter of giving away a VERY inepensive timbit for no charge, then they over-reacted!! Actually, they over-reacted in either situation!

I think there must be some rules on giving away free food but it's probably not strictly enforced, esp. over little things like timbits or packet of crackers. I think in general, either the managers don't know about it or they choose not to see it. I've seen them giving away food too. But I think the problem here was the manager had it in for the woman to begin with and he overreacted by firing her. On top of that, this woman has a sad home situation which everyone can sympathize with. On top of all of that, she went to the press...this made a great story for the newspaper. :P

what's a timbit?

I gotta chime in here and learn what exactly a timbit is! I'm not up in Canada and have never eaten at Tim Hortons. Fill me in ... this naive American!!! :-)

Timbit = the donut hole

... it is the round middle of a donut. They are one bite size and worth a few sense.
