As most of us know, Starbucks was giving away free coffee on April 22nd when you brought in a travel mug. My husband and I took advantage of this and then went for a lovely afternoon walk by the river. And yet most of the walk, we talked about how much more we liked Tim Horton's coffee!
I came across this article, syaing that now Starbucks is putting franchises in Walmart. Which Tim Horton's has already done. What do you think the success of this will be? Do you prefer Tim Horton's or Starbucks and why?
For me, it's Tim Horton's and that may be because I am a little bit more simple and would much prefer a double-double or french vanilla cappuccino than a tall half skinny half 1% extra foam extra hot latte with whip. And maybe it's because Tim Horton's has done an excellent job of giving their company a sense of Canadian pride and patriotism that makes us all gleam with Canadian pride while we eat our chocolate glaze donut and drink our Roll Up the Rim coffee during a hockey game.
And because most Canadians I talk to prefer Tim's over Starbucks (except for some special occassions), I'm not sure how successful a Starbucks that is right next to a Tim's will do. And that's not even considering the price difference!

I don't really like either of their coffees, but I am more likely to buy Starbucks because I prefer espresso-based beverages.
I like Italian coffee made by espresso nerds who get excited about things like crema and foam art.

I honestly just laughed out loud when you said "I like Italian coffee made by espresso nerds who get excited about things like crema and foam art."
I don't mind Starbucks when I want to catch up with a friend, but that's more for the ambiance and the comfortable seating. However, I do enjoy their peppermint white chocolate mocha. It's like Christmas in a cup!
|Starbucks hands down! on Apr 26, 2011 @ 12:04 pm|
I can make regular brewed coffee at home so a Timmies Double Double has no appeal to me. I dont eat the food there either.
I love Starbucks Chai Tea Latte and the occasional fancy hot chocolate or mocha. And I dont find the price any higher than ordering the same type of drink at an independent coffee house. Both are US owned companies now so there is no feeling of buying Canadian either.
Bonus is there are many contests that give Starbucks cards as prizes..not so much for Tim cards. So most of my trips are for free drinks anyway! :)

I'm with Starbucks...though Timmies will do in a pinch ;) I enjoy the variety at Starbucks as well as the taste better. They also have yummy treats that feel like a bit of an indulgence after a day of teething baby ;)

Have you ladies ever tried McDonalds coffee? Now that's good coffee! The price is much more reasonable than Timmies too.
I find Timmies coffee is a hit or miss. Depending on who makes your coffee, you either get something orgasmic-ly good (which is rare) or a milky brownish flavoured water they pass of as coffee. Also I heard Timmies is raising their coffee prices, again. Last time gas prices went high they raised their coffee price. Gas came down, but their coffee price didn't. Gas price is going up again so Timmies is raising $$ again.....
Starbucks is a treat. I love the "tall half skinny half 1% extra foam extra hot latte with whip", and I love how they have excellent customer service (as oppose to some timmies I've been to) but I don't like the price very much, hence the 'treat'.
If you guys are in the mind for a treat, go to Aroma and get a Hot Chocolate. They actually melt chunks of real gorgeous creamy milk chocolate bars with steamed milk. Can you say heaven?

@Becky: that hot chocolate sounds delicious!!
I'll go to Timmies to get tea on occasion or Starbucks for their Green Tea Lattes. Personally I'd rather drink the cafe lattes that I make at home. We have an incredible coffee maker that I don't know what I'd do without. There's the option to make crema, but I prefer to just heat up milk in the microwave, then I push a button and it grinds your beans fresh and out comes a smooth and creamy espresso into my milk cup. There's the option to make crema, but I like it with just regular milk warmed up (it's the Italian in me).

You are definitely right about the customer service. My husband and I decided to stop for some breakfast at one location we don't normally go to and the service was AWFUL. I doubt we'll ever go back there. The one we normally go to is usually great and they always make excellent drinks! But I do agree with the hit and miss.
This Aroma place sounds like it would be my new favorite...

I like Tim's in the morning when it's fresh or when I have a snack/breakfast with it. I like Starbucks in the afternoon. I also find that Starbucks doesn't get bitter like Tim's does sometimes... I drink my coffee black so I can really tell the differance after it sits a little too long.
|Anyone for a Second Cup? on May 03, 2011 @ 09:59 am|
I like Second Cup!
Tim Hortons was something I drank during final Exam periods in school
Starbucks are for the summer, when they bring out frappucinos
but all in all...
Second Cup has the most aromatic flavours I've ever tasted.
This may be because I've worked at several locations in the past three years...But I'ts still awesome!
