Surprise, surprise: Sarah Palin's reality show is canceled by TLC

on Jan 10, 2011 @ 09:49 am

While the show's launch was apparently the best ever for the network, TLC has decided to pull the plug on "Sarah Palin's Alaska".

I didn't watch this (disclaimer - I don't have cable and therefore cannot watch TLC) so I won't miss it.  Did any of you?  Are you pleased or upset about this news?

Won't miss it.. on Jan 10, 2011 @ 10:31 am

I must admit that I did not watch it, but from the previews alone, I knew I would not be a fan. I have seen Sarah Palin in numerous interviews, and I am NOT a fan. I am curious for those that did get into the show... what got you hooked?

political conflict on Jan 10, 2011 @ 12:20 pm

I did not watch the show. No way. No how. However, as I understand it, TLC had to pull the plug on a second season b/c of media laws. If a network gives x time to a political candidate they have to give equal time to any opponents. So if she is to actually be a 2012 USA presidential election candidate, TLC would also have to have a dedicated show (essentially) for her opponent(s) if they had chosen to continue her show. That is simply not practical so they chose to drop her show instead.

that makes sense on Jan 10, 2011 @ 12:36 pm

thanks Spotty, that makes sense! What I had read earlier was only that it was controversial (in the sense that Palin is a bit of a polarizing figure) and that there were a few flubs along the way (ie. the episode that featured Kate Gosselin and brood was apparently a bomb). I just assumed that they were calling it quits before things tanked, but the political question seems highly plausible also.

Either way, Palin got her 15 minutes and much more of PR.
