Hello ladies! Have any of you been to Germany before? If not Germany, any western European country? If so, do you have any tips you could pass along? My fiancé and I are going for our honeymoon in a couple of weeks. We've booked all our rooms through AirBnB to save money. We're going to Frankfurt, Cologne and Dusseldorf, Heidelberg, and Berlin.

@faithroy, I'll have to follow up on this post when we get back from our trip - I got a lot of tips from my sister who just did Italy for her honeymoon.

We are going for 12 days, so she suggested that we pack between 5 and 7 outfits. If possible, pack as much spandex or active wear as possible as this will cut down on weight and space when packing. I currently have 6 outfits in my carry-on bag, and I have room to spare! My bag is only about 10"x20". I wanted to pack everything in my carry-on so that, if our actual luggage got lost on our way, I wouldn't be without the essentials. Since we are staying in homes through AirBnB, we are going to have access to laundry machines without having to pay 4 or 5 Euro per load.

Another perk of choosing AirBnB is we will also have access to kitchens, so we can save a ton of money on restaurants by taking advantage of the grocery stores.

A couple other things she mentioned to me was to make sure we had luggage locks - pick pocketing is very common over there. We also bought RFID blocking money belts to wear under our shirts - this is where we are going to keep our passports, credit cards, debit cards, cash, etc. We both are going to have a copy of each other's passport, plane ticket, etc in our own money belts so if one of us loses ours, we have backup.

I'd really recommend booking entire homes or apartments on AirBnB; James and I booked a private room for a previous trip to Halifax, and we had to share the common areas like bathroom and kitchen. We really want our privacy this time around!

Germany is beautiful! We really enjoyed Cologne. If you have time, do the Lindt chocolate museum and the Cologne perfumery. If you like beer, have the kolsch. If you like wine, go for the rieslings, they are the best!

Cologne

we are in cologne right now! It’s our favourite city so far! We did the chocolate museum, the Dom, The Arcaden shopping centre, botanical gardens, and the zoo...and more, it’s hard to remember everything! But it’s seriously so beautiful, we never want to leave.

We went back to Germany a second time a few years ago and really enjoyed Trier and Rothenburg especially. There is a restaurant in Rothenburg called Zur Holl which is over 500 years old (and its cellar is over 1000 years old!) Do try to fit in a winery tour if you have the time as well! Enjoy your adventure!

Good Choice!

I absolutely adore Berlin and Cologne!!! Good choices for sure! My only advice would be to have fun, go slow, take everything in and remember that you don't always need to spend a ton of money to have an authentic experience. Especially in the big cities, there are always people trying to take advantage of tourists, so be aware and do your own thing :)

Berlin

we were very disappointed with Berlin and Frankfurt actually. Berlin, because we ended up having a TERRIBLE apartment, and we found that there just wasn’t much to do in Frankfurt. Our favourite place so far has been cologne and Kelkheim. Today is our last day, we are actually heading to to airport shortly to fly home :)
