I don't have children either just Todd's son Bill who is 19 now but I have known him since he was 5 years old. I find the Simpsons much tamer than say Family Guy which can be funny but very offensive. But unfortunately for me Todd and Bill like watching both shows. Hopefully someone with small children will give you their opinion.

My parents used to let me watch The Simpsons growing up - probably around late elementary/junior high school age - and it was always on just before dinner time on CBC, so I'm sure they thought - well, if its on at this hour, on CBC, it can't be that bad. I wasn't allowed to watch Family Guy. Now that I look back on both shows, I definitely know why I wasn't allowed to watch Family Guy, and some parts of The Simpsons make my parents' decision questionable...it's definitely a lot more tame than other similar shows, and had I been any younger I doubt they would have let me watch it. My boyfriend still doesn't get The Simpsons references I make because his parents never, ever let him watch it.

I think it depends on the age and maturity level of the kid. I wouldn't let a 5 year old watch it, but middle school/junior high age is probably fine. My mother didn't let me watch it when I was a kid, but when I was around 10, give or take a year or so, I watched it. I think she still thought it was crude at the time, but it's also not her brand of humour. Definitely would NOT let young kids watch Family Guy until they were at least 12, give or take maturity level. In the past few seasons they've crossed the line with a lot of jokes. I don't take it seriously, but kids are impressionable.

I do not let my oldest grandson who is 6 years old watch this show. I find it offensive and has bad language that's inappropriate for young children. My daughter supervises also what he watches at home, mostly cartoons or educational dvd's. Maybe when he's older-but I doubt it.

As a teacher, I would not recommend that young children watch The Simpsons and most definitely not Family Guy. They both deal with subjects that children should not be exposed to and they will think the behaviour they are observing is acceptable, when it is not. This falls more or less into the same basket as playing violent video games. It ultimately affects the way the child perceives the world around them and of course, their own behaviour. I would wait until the child could think critically, which is in the teenage years (preferably mid to later teenage years), to introduce The Simpsons. They will have a better judgment as to whether or not the actions that are being portrayed, are right or wrong.
As for Family Guy, the subject matter is geared towards adults. It's unfortunate that they use animation to get children to watch their show when they shouldn't. Same with the South Park series. It was meant for adults but ultimately, more and more children ended up watching it. The influence these shows have on behaviour is notable and any responsible parent would think twice before allowing their children to watch them.

I have kids my oldest is 9 it's a no show for me. But my parents let him watch!!! Drives me nuts I think it's inappropriate for kids under 12-13.

I actually remember watching it as a kid when I was about 10 and up. I always thought the show was really funny and I probably didn't understand some of the jokes on the show at the time. I actually watched it with my family so I don't see the big deal in kids watching it. As long as they are not like 4-8 years old then I think it's fine!
But everyone is going to have a different opinion on it no matter what. And every household has different rules set in place. :)

I remember watching it as a kid even though my parents didn't like it but it was a lot tamer than South Park, Family Guy, American Dad etc. I think it depends on the maturity of your child along with age too of course...Some episodes are worse than others too though so it's hard to say. Society is pretty brutal these days and I'm sure they see all kinds of horrible things when they're not with us, at school or even on social media.

I don't see anything wrong with any age to watch the Simpsons. The funniest one of all on that show is Bart.He is such a ticket.I get a big laugh of watching him,The Simpsons has been on TV now for quite a few years and haven't heard anything bad about the Cartoon.
