Dream Analysis!

Last night something quite frightening happened to me. I was in the middle of a dream .In my dream I was walking in to my bathroom, but the glass in the window was not in the frame, it was tilted against the wall. In my dream I thought this was very strange. Then all sudden of ain my dream I could not breathe, it was like I had run out of breathe completely. I grabbed something and started banging it against the wall in hopes someone would hear me and come in to help me, but what I was banging on the wall was not making a loud noise. (It was the middle of the night in my dream so I would have to try to wake someone up with this noise and it was not working.) Then I woke up and I had lost my breathe and my heart was beating faster than it ever has in my life. For what felt like the longest time my heart was beating crazily and I just lay there consciously trying to regain my breathe. It was almost as if I had not woken up at that exact second I would have suffocated.

It was very odd and then I talked to my mom in the morning and she said when she was my age she had 3 dreams like this where she woke up breathless. I am just wondering does anyone know anything about this...what it means....is it symbolic of anything?

Any help would be very intriguing! I am curious and want to know what this strange dream awakening means!

This is what
I do and I have for years, you can try this if you'd like to. First go to a good
book store and find a good dream book. One that you can break the dream down
into signal words and then look toughs words up. The book will tell you what
the meaning of the dream is that way. Also keep a pen and paper next to your
bed and as soon as you wake up write down as much from your dream that you can
recall. Most dreams only last for second although they seem like they last for hours.
There are several dream analysis books that you can buy and keep next to your
bed for this very situation. Dreams are something people have been trying to
figure out for many, many years and its one thing that science haven't really bin
able completely figure out. Some will tell you that these books are nothing but
bull, but they can make you feel so much better and help you to deal with your
strange dreams. I have found that if a dream seems bad while your having it,
they turn out to be good signs after their looked up. One other thing you can
do if this dream happens again is to try staying asleep till the end of that dream and see where it goes.
When I was a little girl I use to have this really scary dream over and over
again. I would have this dream at least ounce a month for a few years, but I
always woke before it had ended. One night I told myself in the dream that I
was going to make myself stay asleep to the end of this dream and find out what
happens, that I wasn't going to let it scare me any more. The next time it
started I did just that and made myself stay there till the end. It ended up
being a funny dream in the end. I woke up the next morning laughing about it, but the best thing about it is that
I've never had the dream since then. So if you're willing you can try that too.
But you should really pick up a good dream book so you can look up all of your
dreams. Are dreams are sometimes trying to tell us things about ourselves and
we should always try listen to that little inner voice we all have, but all tend to
ignore. Having a dream book is always nice to have next to your bed because as
you know we do have some strange dreams. I know I’ve woken up many time and
thought what the he$$ was that all about before I had my book. I’m not sure if the
book I have is even still on the market, but there are many others you can buy.
My books so old its bin taped back together a few times and the cover is
missing. If you want the name of my book let me know and I’ll dig it out for
ya. I hope this has helped a little galmgal. Good luck and big hugs to ya!!

This one time, I had a dream that I was Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I'm not.

What I mean is- most dreams mean nothing, they are just your brain trying to decipher your day. Some dreams do mean something though. I agree with Takoda- the best way to figure out what it means is to look it up in a book or on a dream analysis site.

For the most part though, if this is worrying you, I wouldn't freak just yet- I am sure this is just a passing thing.

I believe they do have meaning...

I find the dreams I have DO have meaning, but this may only hold true for some...reason I say this is, ever since my dad died suddenly two years ago (we found him dead in a chair at home after heart failure), not one nite has passed since I havent had a dream about him...I think its my mind really missing him and him being in my dreams fills that void so to speak. The night after he passed away, I actually had a VISITATION dream from him (depends if you believe in this or not) but I knew it was really him and he told me to meet him at the cemetery at 10 am and I couldnt be a minute late (which is so ironic because we never had an exact time of when he died but we knew it was sometime between 9-11am and we didnt get home until 5pm)...so it was almost like it was 10am that he passed away and he was very upset in the dream because all he worried about was my mom being alone for the rest of her life and told me to make sure that my sister and I take care of her and never leave her by herself. It is totally what my dad would have said....

anyways, the moral of my story is I would definitely look into your dream...like Takoda said, find a great book :)

hard to say

I definitely believe dreams can be messages - messages from your body (ie. health), messages from Beyond (like visitations), messages from God. I also agree that dreams are a recycling facility where your mind is simply processing the random information gathered from the day/month/year/life. That's why many dreams are so very random.

However, dreams that frighten or leave strong feelings (any kind) may be messages. Someone in my family has uncanny dreams often - usually they are of events in motion or just passed but of which she could not have possibly known. That's when she starts phoning the whole family asking "okay, so which one of you just fell down the stairs?" Sometimes her dreams are predictions, though these are harder to peg as it's easy to read correlation into these possible "messages". All I know is, I believe her.

Many dream analysis books and experts say that certain recurring dreams or imagery signifies a fear you may have or a trauma that you have blocked from your conscious mind. More than worrying about occasional random nightmares (which everyone has), I'd focus more on recurrence and commonalities before you start your search for significance.

Do as others have suggested - write stuff down, consult people who are experts, and realize that most of the time it's just random crap your brain is in the process of cleaning out. Understand too, that there is a lot of hooey out there masquerading as "fact" and pseudoscience. Know where you're getting your information from and don't allow hysteria to sweep away logical reasoning. A little faith is vital, but rationality will help keep this process grounded.

@shellsbells: honey your dream made me cry.. :'( I'm soo sorry for your loss.. I can't even imagine what it must be like to lose a parent...

@glamgal: I generally agree with what @alexjc said "What I mean is- most dreams mean nothing, they are just your brain trying to decipher your day."

Last night, just before going to bed I was talking to my hubby about when we should think about having a baby (thank you ALI for your cute baby pics and positive new-mom experiences!! now you got that in my head!! lol) ...anyways I dreamed that we had a baby girl, and my mom kept giving me stupid name suggestions to name her (names that sound weird or are easy to make fun of). I was panicking cuz I couldn't find a name for her and I couldn't leave the hospital without registering a name!

I'm always a rockstar or I can fly or I'm Hermione, basically I'm someone I really want to be. I wouldn't worry about the dream too much.

Also, if while you're sleeping, perhaps you're sleeping on your stomach so you're feeling a sort of suffocating sensation, your brain will take that sensation and translate it into a weird dream where you are suffocating. Ever have those dreams where you're looking all over for a bathroom, and you wake up and realize you gotta go pee? Exactly.

Visitation Dreams

@shellsbells85 I have had those dreams too and I believe they are real. It happened with my Grandfather who passed away in 2010 and my Great Grandmother who died when I was little. I hardly remember anything about her, but I saw her in a dream and she told me something, which I repeated to my Mother. She started crying saying it was something she used to say to her. It was really comforting to her.

I've had all sorts of wacky dreams but never looked any of them up.

Visitation Dreams too!

I actually did have a visitation dream the night my grandfather passed away, the strangest thing was that my entire family had similar dreams about my grandfather.

In my dream he was with my grandmother who had passed away years before, but my grandfather still constantly talked about her, so it was definitely a huge comfort to me and my family and I wasn't actually that sad when he passed away, just relieved that he was where he was supposed to be.

Little kids have these too

My 4 year old niece had a dream about my Grandfather just recently and she said he was with her little sister who died in utero while my sister in law was 20 weeks pregnant. She was very matter of fact about her dream when she told it to her Mom. I think kids are more open in general to these kinds of things.
