The Boyfriend Jean: How to Wear It

| Wednesday April 15, 20094 comments
PROCEED WITH CAUTION: Boyfriend jeans ahead!

Okay, they’re not so much ‘ahead’ as they’re -*ahem*- here. Quick! Veer to the left, the right, make an illegal U-turn! Attach your skinny jeans to your radio antenna while you shriek warrior chants as a sign of your valiant victory! WE WANT TO STAY SKINNY!

But in the distance you see a crowd. A plethora of people spanning the entire width of the road, just standing, staring…waiting for you. And this isn’t a crowd full of strangers wanting to hijack your tires or hitch a ride to Woodstock – you recognize each and every one of them.

Jennifer, Katie, Eva, Posh – it’s a clan of celebrities, all of them sporting a unique pair of Boyfriend jeans, most looking better than others and some possibly pregnant (!!!). From amongst the crowd Jason Trotzuk of Fidelity Denim emerges. Curiously you ask him, ‘Why? Why now?’, as you desperately clutch onto your skinny jeans.

‘Because we all need a little chill out every once in a while! Fashion has spent several seasons in dress mode and this look is very broken down and simple, it says, “I’m comfortable with myself and who I am.” ‘

Looking over at all the celebrities, you’re nearly convinced. Some uncertainties arise as you notice Katie wearing an overly baggy pair with a tapered cuff and strappy heels – this look isn’t for everyone (ladies with short legs, please steer clear, this style is best for the tall and lean.) Shorter ladies looking to try this look should go for a higher cuff and a slimmer cut to elongate your legs.

You notice Jennifer looking great in a loose, straight legged pair, accented with a form fitting shirt and sandals. Smiling, you know that this look will work for you and nearly any body type out there. Not to mention the tight shirt lets you maintain your sexy femininity. A slightly higher cuff with rough patches is also incredibly versatile.

Jason Trotzuk reminds you that the draw of this look is that you can really make it your own. ‘Cuffed is great, so is rolled, unrolled, flats, chunks, heels – you name it! It’s time to loosen your grip on those skinny jeans and become less ambivalent towards these so-called ‘boyfriend jeans’. As you stand pant-less in the middle of the road you start wishing you had a pair right now. Odds are you already do. At home…in the back of your messy closet.
