Adventures in Baking: Cake Pops

Posted by Alexandra C. | Wednesday January 4, 201234 comments

Cake pops have officially taken the baking world by storm and it's easy to see why. They are adorable, bite sized and when it comes to decorating them, the possibilities are endless!

The actual cake pops are easy to make and only require a few ingredients and directions- this video from Starbucks (who provided a cake pop kit for us) explains it easily.

The best part of making cake pops though (of course, besides the eating part) is decorating them. Because of their texture, cake pops need to covered in melted chocolate (not icing!), and this chocolate becomes the base for any additional decorations.

I took a trip down to my local bulk food store and picked up a bunch of supplies for my decorating needs. Try sprinkles, coloured sugar or candies- whatever grabs your attention!

I love the idea of drizzling chocolate over chocolate- double chocolate is double delicious. Try playing around with food colouring and coloured confectionery chocolate too!

Looking to amp up your cake popping? If you're up for the challenge, try using fondant or marzipan to create cute cake pop figures.

Remember- it's all in the presentation so, when showing off your undoubtedly gorgeous creations, why not try some different styles? A bouquet of pops, a vase, or even a cake made out of cake pops is so much fun and can actually be dressed up formally.

Have you ever made cake pops- got any good baking tips?

@staceb - I have heard that from scratch is a bit harder, also try cake pop makers like this one: http://www.amazon.ca/Babycakes-CP-12-Cake-Maker-Purple/dp/B0050JRZR2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326336781&sr=8-2

I tried to make these from scratch and failed miserably. Maybe I'll try a kit next time

I love these wonderful pictures! They would make excellent desktop backgrounds. So cute
my favorite is the rainbow inspired ones with the squzzles in every color. The wedding cake with
the white cake balls is divine. That must take forever to assemble. I'm going to have to try & make
cake pops now!
