Hot Trend: Sheer Striped Tights

Posted by Hafsa | Monday October 18, 20106 comments

They made a brief appearance on the runways a year and a half ago, and now sheer tights with stripes have finally made it to retail stores - where they're selling like hotcakes!

For his Fall 2009 RTW show at Paris Fashion Week, designer Jean Paul Gaultier dressed his models in sheer panelled tights.

Perhaps designers like Wunderkind and Victor & Wolf were inspired by Gaultier when designing their own looks for their Spring/Summer 2011 collections showcased earlier this month at Paris Fashion Week.

Then Madonna's daughter Lourdes was spotted wearing sheer striped tights last month.

Here's how we'd wear striped tights:

French Connection Belted Sweater US$118, Topshop Indigo Culotte Shorts US$65, American Apparel Sheer Luxe Solid Stripe Pantyhose US$22
Zara Cardigan US$50, Cecily Jones Bunty Dress US$48, Elite Retail Striped Stockings US$5
Forever 21 Eiffel Tower Necklace US$5.80, Alexander Wang Panelled Dress US$200, Pamela Mann Vertical Sheer Striped Tights US$13.30
Zara Large Clutch Bag US$99, Forever 21 Long Sweater Top US$12.50, Topshop Opaque Sheer Panel Tights US$20
Gap Wideneck Sweater US$32, H&M Skirt US$6, Urban Outfitters Pinstripe Floral Tights US$14

Which style do you prefer: the Pippi Longstocking-esque horizontal stripes, or elongating vertical panelled tights?

I'd have to agree with Takoda but with Ali also. I would definitely not wear these because I have big legs so I don't ever show them, stripped socks would draw too much attention to them. If you have slim legs now that would be a different story.

I think these are really fun but they won't work for everyone. My first thought when I saw this was that Andy Pandy rocked this first. Avoid the horizontal stripes unless you have really skinny legs or it could look clownish. I'd definitely try the panel ones.

I love the horizontal stripes! They might be a tad more 'user-friendly' if the stripes only consumed a portion of the tights (ie - just over the knee, above the knee, or just above the ankles) while mainting the sheer look on the rest of the leg.

I agree with Mamaluv about the monochrome look. And I like it with solid colour dresses or oversized sweaters

I like the wide vertical stripes, but not so much the pinstripes or horizontals. I really like the monochrome take on the look, as in the center and right models for Gaultier!

I don't care for this at all.
I'd feel like a clown walking down the street in them, but that's just me.
