DIY Drinks: Brazilian Lemonade Recipe

So, I know that lemonade is typically a summertime drink, but in the middle of winter, after the holidays have long passed and all your left with some grey weather, a bit some Brazilian lemonade is exactly what the doctor ordered! This very refreshing, tart and tasty beverage is the perfect antidote to a dull day and it's so lip-smackingly delicious you'll be craving more! The recipe is a little weird at first glance, but I promise you that once you try it, there will be no going back.

Traditionally, this drink is made only with limes since they don't really have lemons in Brazil; however, I decided to use a mixture of lemons and limes for this recipe and it turned out beautifully! Also, be sure to choose the juiciest fruits possible and it helps if the skin on the fruits is as thin as possible as well. Also untraditional, is the addition of alcohol but after trying this one out, I'm very tempted to add some tequila or rum to the mix, I think it would be a fabulous party drink!

What You'll Need:

4 Limes (or a mixture of lemons and limes)
1 Cup Sugar
6 Cups Water
6 Tbsp Sweetened Condensed Milk

Step 1: Water and Sugar

Add the water and sugar together and whisk to mix thoroughly. Let chill until ready for use.

Step 2: Prepare Limes and Lemons

Wash your limes or lemons with soap and water first (because you'll be using the entire fruit). Cut off ends and then cut fruit into eights.

Step 3: Blend

Pour half of your sugar water mixture into a blender and also put in half of your fruits. Pulse five times, your mixture should look something like the photo on the right.

Step 4: Strain

Place a fine mesh strainer over the pitcher you'll be using to serve the drink in. Pour the blended fruit and sugar water over top the strainer and into the pitcher. Once all the rind and pulp is collected in the strainer you can use a spoon to press out any remaining juice and then throw it away.

Repeat steps 3 + 4 with the rest of the fruits and sugar water.

Step 5: Sweeten

Add the 6 tbsp of condensed milk to your pitcher and using a whisk stir to ensure it is well mixed.

Tip: Remember that this lemonade is just over 6 cups so you'll need to find a pitcher big enough. You may need to use two pitchers.

Step 6: Enjoy!

]
Serve the lemonade in a tall glass with lots of ice and garnish with a lemon or lime slice! Remember- when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

What's your favourite winter pick me up drink or food?
