Hangover Cures + 3 Crazy Remedies From Around The World

Who else woke up with a splitting headache on January 1st? Fess up and raise your hand. We've all been there. January 1st was mostly spent in bed for me, with a brief break when I crawled into the kitchen to scavenge for food and then back to bed. Think bear in hibernation mode.

Next year though, I'll be prepared. Here are a few hangover cure tips and tricks that the chick staffers swear by. And for fun, a few zany and totally crazy hangover cures from around the world:

1. Aluminium Foil Mask: Your body isn't the only part of you that suffers from a hangover, your skin does as well. Take a large strip of foil (large enough to make a mask for your face) and chill in freezer. When it's nice and cold, poke out holes for eyes and to breathe and sit with it on for about 10-15 minutes to de-puff. (via refinery29.com

2. Coffee: This is a tricky one. As a caffeine junkie, when I don't get my java fix, I go through withdrawal symptoms (headaches, major irritability to name a few) which makes a hangover worse. However, at the same time, coffee constricts blood vessels which can worsen a hangover. Play it safe instead and drink a small amount in morning after a glass or two of water. Hydrate and you can drink more as the day goes on.

3. Water: This one is obvious but a must. Drink water before you go to bed that night and if possible, throughout the night as well. In the morning, drink more. More water = less pain when it comes to hangovers.

4. Sprite or Soda Water: As alcohol is broken down in the liver, acetaldehyde is created. This is what causes a hangover. Acetaldehyde then turns into acetate which doesn't cause any of the hangover symptoms. To accelerate acetaldehyde turning into acetate try drinking Sprite or soda water. (via refinery29.com

5. Sport Drinks: One of my own go-tos, I always buy a bottle of a sport drink after a night out to replace electrolytes. Plus: it's going to help with that dehydration headache.

These aren't cutting it for you? Why not test out one of these bizarre hangover cures from around the world:

1. Tripe Soup from Turkey: yup, it's gut soup for your gut!

2. Katerfrühstück from Germany: means 'hangover breakfast' and consists of rollmops: pickled herring wrapped around pickled cucumber and onion.

3. Lemons from Puerto Rico: it's said that placing lemons under your armpits before you drink helps stop a hangover....hmmmm....

Got any hangover cures for us?

That lemon under the armpit is so absurd, it's hilarious. Sports drinks have always been a go to cure.

I swear by Gatorade and Powerade for hangovers! They make me feel wonderful the next day. I had a really bad hangover after New Years this year, first time in a while since I've had one, and Powerade was my immediate go-to the next morning. They also help after a day of stomach flu, etc. I had food poisoning once and the doctor told me to drink Gatorade. I was a bit worried because it had sugar, but it did wonders and helped me recover. They also helped my boyfriend's very bad acid reflux days when he would be sick the entire day, or days vomiting from very bad reflux. More than one use here!

I'm on the coconut water train as of late. It's a freaky texture/colour when you first encounter it (okay, EVERYTHING is freaky about it) but once you get beyond that, you're cruising to electrolyte city.
