My Battle for a Better Nose (and why I'm on round 3)

Third time's the charm, right?  I'm counting on that.

Plastic surgery isn't something I've ever really approved of because I've heard too many horror stories.  Generally, unless you have a horn growing out of your forehead or a nose that doubles your facial square footage, I think you should leave well enough alone.  And yet, here I am, about to embark on round 3.

Let me start at the beginning.  Ten years ago I had a deviated septum corrected.  My breathing was always an issue and I couldn't go 10 minutes without blowing my nose.  On occasion, my nose would become red and swollen like a drunk cartoon character.  Neither was I thrilled about the size.  It was a reasonably normal looking nose but as a child, a little boy I liked looked up at me during quiet time in grade one and sweetly told me I had a big nose.  It scarred me for life and I became self-conscious about it from that point forward.  Parents, please remind your kids that honesty is not the best policy in every situation, mmkay?

I booked my first surgery thinking this would be my one and only procedure and I would happily emerge with the best-breathing best-looking nose a gal could ask for.

My new nose lasted about one year before it started to become deformed.  The tip twisted and skewed to the left.  My body rejected the sutures and they started spitting out the side of my nose.  Have you ever heard of such a thing??  A second procedure was required to fix this, which I had 4 years ago.  Unfortunately the tip started to warp again.  It was mild at first, but over the last couple of years it became very deformed until one day when my Grandma asked, "Dear, this thing on your nose. Is it a wart?"

I have spent the past 9 months looking for a new, genius surgeon because it's a lot more complicated this being my third go at it.  It has to be done with someone who really knows what they are doing.  I met with all the top doctors in my city, but none were able to show me similar cases they've successfully handled.  So here I sit with my warty nose on the eve of my third surgery, in the capital state of plastic surgery--California, of course.  I found a surgeon that I am very confident can fix my poor, humiliated nose once and for all.  However, he told me he may need to use parts of my ear or ribs to fix it.  Fantastic!

I have to admit, I'm really afraid to do this surgery again.  Not just because I might not get the result I'm hoping for, but also because death and other health effects are possible outcomes of general anesthesia.  That's not something you're thinking about when choosing a new nose. And yet, compared to shopping for a new car, the price tag is roughly the same.

I am really looking forward to putting this experience behind me.  While I support those who suffer from a medical or cosmetic issue that genuinely impacts their life in a negative way, going in for a vanity tweak may not be worth the risk. Things don't always turn out as promised.  Beauty is so fleeting and subjective.  The most beautiful people are confident and don't give two farts about the size of their nose, breasts or butt.  I encourage you to be one of those people.

No I haven't, but I completely understand why you have gone through with it. As for being put under, if this would only be your third time going under then I think your worrying to much about it. I've been put under six, or seven times and haven't had a problem. My sister in-law has been put under some many time we've quit counting. If you had a problem the first, or second time then that would be a different story. The first time my niece was put under she almost died because of it. They never even got the surgery started on her when things started to go wrong. So it pretty much depends on the person. If your that worried about your best bet would be to talk to the surgeon about it long before you go in. Tell him your concerns and see what she/he has to say about it. Good luck!!
