Would You Try This: Jell-O Lip Stain

Posted by Alexandra C. | Tuesday March 27, 201224 comments

Who doesn't love a little jiggly Jell-O in their life? It's delicious to eat but how about using it as a lip stain?

I'd actually heard about using Jell-O powder as a hair dye before, it was especially popular when I was in elementary school before we were allowed to try out any real hair dyes. However, as a lip stain? I found out about this tip on this blog, where it was actually endorsed by a make up artist.

Jell-O is dirt cheap so I figured, why not give it a try? If it was long lasting and as easy as they suggested, this cheap alternative to a lip stain would be a miracle!

Here's what you need:

Jell-O (I'm using a generic brand) and water

The original post I read suggested simply wetting your lips and brushing on the powder, I decided to mix the water and powder first separately.

This is the mixture swatched on my hand, you can see how pigmented it is and when rubbed in, it does stain the skin!

The Application:

I just kind of 'went for it' at this point. I dipped my finger, trying to get mostly the red water mixture and applied it all over my lips. After applying, your lips are very sticky, which isn't a very pleasant feeling. It felt very drying as well. At this point, I decided it would be a good experiment to take some of the sugar heavy and water mixture and use it as a scrub, which I believed would double as a stain. It did stain my lips, however the sugar, was literally all over my face. Beauty is a messy business, chicks.

The Look:

On the left, is my before picture with a bit of lip balm but otherwise with nothing else. On the right, are my Jell-O stained lips. I notice a difference, for sure, but is it worth it?

I wanted to compare the Jell-O stain in pigmentation and quality to another product. Here, I am wearing my Revlon Color Burst Lip Butter in Raspberry Pie (C$8.99), which I felt was a similar colour.

The Verdict: I'll pass.

I guess it did work, but this is just was too messy and way too inconvenient for me. As far as the "long lasting-ness" of the product goes, I didn't see anything that would persuade me to try this again. The one plus this has going for it would be that it is cheap but otherwise, I'm not really sure when this would come in handy. I mean, I've never run out of lipgloss, ever, in my entire life. Have you?

What do you chicks think? Is this something you'd try? Have you ever heard of this before?

You can see the difference in the pictures but I like the last lip gloss more. Probably use Jello if I had nothing else.

haha So true, I've never ever run out of lip gloss either. This is a cool idea but seems too messy and sticky. Not worth it.

It looks like it works but it is a lot of work for the result that looks similar to regular lip gloss. I think I would just stick to lip gloss to avoid the hassle factor.

I don't think I'd use it unless I was desperate. haha Like, no lip colour in my house at all. (not likely to happen.. but ya never know)

I have not heard of this but I would pass on this one...Firstly because I don't use any products containing gelatin. Also I wouldn't want the dye on my lips and I hate anything that tastes to sugary. For some strange reason this is reminding me of when I was a teenager and my friends and I would dye our hair with Koolaid lol.I think Koolaid would probably work as a lip stain as well. You can definitely see the color on your lips Alex and the color really suites you!

Never heard of using jello before! When I was little I used to pick raspberries and blackberries in my grandma's garden, and take a bite then rub the berries on my lips :P
