Cheat #1: Candles

Okay, seems kind of obvious I know, but seriously, candlelight makes everything (and everyone) look better. You can choose different candles sizes to create a mellow or dramatic setting, which all adds to the atmosphere. I like the idea of going with different lengths all together. Don't be afraid to overdose on the candlelight either, because there is no such thing! Surround yourself with candles for a romantic setting.

1. Ikea Glimma Candle Holder, pack of 6 (C$3.49)

2. Ikea Blomster Lantern (C$19.99)

3. Ikea Fenomen Unscented Block Candle, set of 5 (C$8.99)

4. Ikea Pomp Lantern for Block Candle (C$14.99)

Cheat #2: Scents

Start at the front entry, right when your guests enter! Let them be greeted by delicious smells and create a sense of comfort.

Cheat #3: Lanterns

Paper lanterns are inexpensive, but hung in monochrome colours can look elegant and chic.

Cheat #4: Buy it, Don't DIY it

You know how much I love a good DIY project, but sometimes I just don't have the time or energy. Don't be ashamed to buy pre-made products or something that can simply be added to what you already have. Try adding bendable wire LED twinkle lights on garland with ribbons and bows already set in.

1. Febreze Holiday Scents Bundle-Buy (US$24.00)

2. Martha Stewart Celebrate Paper Lanterns (US$13.40)

3. Noma Battery-Operated Indoor LED Christmas Ribbon Lights (C$9.99), Assorted ColoursNoma Battery Operated LED Pre-lit Bow (C$14.99)

4. Noma Battery Operated LED Clear Wire Light (C$7.99)

Cheat #4: Mirrored Table

Buy an inexpensive, thin and long mirror (remove frame if necessary) and lay flat on a table. Dim your lights, add your candles and spread. You'll be amazed at how you're transformed into a winter wonderland. The lights reflect off of the surface and have a gorgeous illuminating effect.

1. Value Door Mirror (C$7.66)

2. Frameless Rectangular Mirror (US$9.96)

3. Ikea Minde Mirror (C$12.99)

I love mirrors around the home. It makes the rooms appear larger, and brighter as well. I also have Frebreeze in nearly every room, to add a little freshness when it's needed.

I like to put pine cones that have a nice smell to them, into a container like the Blomster Lantern shown in cheat number one. It make the whole room smell so nice and they tend to last all season long.
