DIY Beauty: Your Guide to Natural Beauty Ingredients

I'm a huge believer in tea tree oil and use it regularly for it's antibacterial, acne fighting properties. Not only do I use it as spot treatment, but I've also used it in homemade toners and scrubs. Playing around with tea tree oil has opened me up to a ton of natural items that can be used for skincare or implemented into your beauty routine. It's surprising how many of these products you already have in your cabinet or kitchen cupboards. It's also a good reminder to look for these active ingredients in products that you purchase.

Whether you're using them alone, as a spot treatment or incorporating them into a homemade beauty product like a mask, next time you're at the store have this list of 10 natural ingredients ready!

1. Argan Oil: Great for making your hair stronger, silkier and smoother. Also contains linoleic acid which is known for it's anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce acne and retain your skin's moisture.

Josie Maran Argan Oil (C$58.00)

2. Vitamin C: is best for anti-aging. It fights free-radical damage, and can help minimize fine lines.

Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder (C$46.00) + Korres Wild Rose + Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial (C$62.50)

3. Baking Soda: Can not only be used to deodorize your fridge but also to whiten your teeth!

Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (C$2.99)

4. Coconut Oil: When you need extra TLC for your dry skin, coconut oil is where it's at. It's a multi-purpose oil so it can also be used in your hair or for homemade beauty products like scrubs.

Dr. Bronner's Organic White Virgin Coconut Oil (C$12.49) + Lush Coco Lotion (C$22.95)

5. Green Tea: is full of anti oxidants and you can drink and also apply topically to help soothe skin and reduce acne.

St. Ives Naturally Clear Green Tea Scrub (C$5.49)

6. Lemons: Use a slice to dry out a pimple and with it's acidity, can be used to brighten skin.

Ole Henrikson Lemon Strip Flash Peel (C$60.00)

7. Propolis:
Bees use propolis, an antimicrobial resin, to sterilize their hives. Apparently it's also a great product for humans. It's great to help you get over a cold and if applied topically, it functions as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Organika Bee Propolis (C$16.99)

8. Honey: We used honey in this warming face mask because it's soothing and moisturising. It's also said to be anti-bacterial and prevent scarring which makes it an excellent product for combination, acne-prone skin.

Hawkins Honey White Liquid Honey (C$14.99)

9. Shea Butter: Shea butter is ultra hydrating for your parched winter skin.

The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter & Sesame Body Balm (C$24.00) + L'Occitane Shea Butter Lip Balm Stick (C$12.00)

10. Tea Tree Oil: I've already spouted the benefits of tea tree oil for oily, acne prone skin but I can never show my love enough!

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil (C$9.00)

Tip: 11. Supplements: Don't forget that supplements can also be a huge benefit to your skin, hair and nails! Check out our list of excellent supplements to try here

I love all of these DIY beauty tips and love trying new things like this. I also started taking Biotin and Perfect skin not long after I read about these supplements back in April and I'm still on the fence
about them. I've been taking the Biotin everyday since then, but I
haven't taken the Perfect skin everyday like it said to do. I haven't
had near the trouble with my skin that I had been having. However I have also been using a new skin cleansing regiment for the past year. So I'm not sure witch one is really giving me the good results. As for the Biotin helping with my hair and nail's, I'm not so sure about this either. I will continue to it, but I'm not going to bother buying more of the Perfect skin.
