Is It Ok to Use a Coupon on The First Date?

You're reveling in the last mouthful of Tiramisu, a first date that has gone very well so far and then the bill arrives.  No, he doesn't push the check your way or suggest you "go halvsies"... he reaches into his pocket and produces a buy 1 get 1 free entree coupon

Can you use a coupon on the first date?
We recently read an article on Moneywatch that asks the question: Is this acceptable on a date?  Now before you start waxing poetic on the importance of fiscal responsibility, what if it was your first date?  If you've been together for a long time obviously this wouldn't be a big deal, but if it was your first impression would you think he was being cheap or savvy?

Tip: Try not to be influenced by our stock model's skeevy soul patch while you contemplate this hypothetical situation.

I have to admit I'd be a bit put off by the presence of a coupon on a first date. It's a first impression thing. Being good with money is very important so you wouldn't want to see him pull out all the stops on the first date but a coupon would be pushing it. I'd worry if he was having trouble paying his bills... and at what point he'd need my help to pay them! After a few months this wouldn't bug me at all.

With my husband, he wouldn't dream of pulling out a coupon on the first date. When times were tough, he cooked me a meal from scratch at his place, which I thought was extremely romantic.

Now, if we get a good deal or a coupon we are praising each other for finding it. It all depends on what stage of the relationship you are in.

I think it's a little weird for the first date. I agree that if I was really into someone, it wouldn't totally turn me off of him, but I think I'd do a double take when I saw it!

There was a time when I would be very turned off by that. First dates shouldn't be an opportunity to skimp, and if money's tight, I would be up for a low cost date that showed a lot of thought - picnic in the park, for example.

But now, older and wiser, if I were back in the dating game I don't think it'd throw me. If it did, then clearly I am not as into the guy as I need to be. If I am seriously interested, it'd take more than a silly coupon to scare me off.

So I assume, anyway. I'm married and have no plans to start dating someone new ;)
