If you colour your hair regularly you’re no stranger to the disappointment you feel after the first and second wash, wondering why your new hue looks to be washing down the drain. There are many shampoos on shelves to help you fight the fade, check out these six:

1.Garnier Fructis Color Shield Shampoo C$6.57/US$2.78
Acai berry (an antioxidant) and grape seed oil (adds shine without being greasy) protect the hair, keeping it moisturized as dry hair can't hold in colour; UVA and UVB shields make sure the sun doesn't tweak your colour, either.

2. L'Oreal Paris Hair Expertise Color Radiance Shampoo C$5.99*
The UV enriched formula nourishes the hair to make it look and feel silky, and protects the hair from external aggressors that accelerate fading. You’re hair colour won’t dull out after a week.

3. Infusium 23 Color Protector Shampoo C$7.69/US$6.00
Removes residue and build up so colour can shine through; nourishes hair with its i-23 Complex of pro-vitamins, proteins and amino acids which also help fight the fade.

4. Schwarzkopf Professional Essensity Colour Shampoo C$16.25 (available at salons only)
Made with 90% natural ingredients that won’t aggressively wash the colour out, instead natural micro proteins like moringa oleifera protect hair fibres against external aggressors.

5. Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo US$15.99
100% organic ingredients like Babassu Betaine, improve foaming and emollient properties in the shampoo without damaging the colour.

6. Redken Colour Extend Shampoo C$18.00/US$13.00
Cranberry oil helps to bring colour vibrancy and ceramide acts strengthens the hair fibres lock in colour and keep out external aggressors.

Have you tried a special colour protecting shampoo?

*Available At mass-market retailers (Shoppers Drug Mart,Walmart) in Canada, not available in the US.

I love John Friedas line of shampoos for colour treated hair. The colour renew tone correcting shampoo is my fav. Whenever my blonde turns brasy I use the shampoo and my brass is gone.

What a great round-up Lauren. This is really useful- my color never holds very well so it's nice to have the option of getting a color shield shampoo/conditioner like this! I've used Aveda and I love it!

I've been using the Essensity shampoo for about a month now (in combination with a moisturizing shampoo) and I've been pretty pleased with how well my colour has stuck - of course that could also be thanks to the innovative people at Clairol had me try the new Natural Instinct Vibrant colour: http://www.chickadvisor.com/item/clairol-natural-instincts-vibrant/)

I agree though, you have to keep coloured hair mousturized otherwise the colour has nothing to hold onto

It's so disappointing when you spend money getting your hair coloured and it looks so great, and then after a few shampoos it seems dull or all the variation in shades is done in your highlights. It really is all about finding a good shampoo to keep it hydrated and removing buildup, especially if you use a lot of styling product.

I've used the Redken, and it's really moisturizing. I like John Frieda's Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo too, helps with brassiness.
