Post-Holiday Skincare Rescue 3 Step Routine

Posted by Alexandra C. | Thursday January 2, 20144 comments

So, you've woken up with a wicked bad hangover and it's not just your head that's suffering. Your skin is not happy with that extra cocktail, either. Just like alcohol causes your body to be dehydrated (and that explains the pounding headache), it also causes parched skin. Or perhaps you're like me and while you love sugar in liquid form, your guilty pleasure is a mountain of cookies, hot cocoa and bad TV. Either way, combined with the dry cold winds, it makes for one bad case of breakouts and dry skin. To start off the new year right (with gorgeous skin), we put together this mini pampering routine to rescue your skin.

So, while you're at home nursing that hangover, why not treat your skin too?

Step 1: Detox

I always feel icky (for lack of a better word) after a big night out, so the first thing I do is thoroughly cleanse my skin. I just started using the Clairsonic which gives a great deep clean, but I'm also loving oil cleansers. You want to be sure you've removed all your makeup (cause gurl, we all know that crash into bed with your clothes on moment). After I cleanse, I love a good mask to really purify and rid my face of toxins. Here are a few favourites to try:

1. Skin Essence Organics Facial In A Jar (C$35.00)

2. Fresh Sugar Face Polish (C$63.00)

3. Boscia Konjac Cleansing Sponge (C$22.00)

4. Boscia Luminizing Black Mask (C$41.00)

5. No7 Beautiful Skin Purifying Mask (US$16.99)

Step 2: Rehydrate

Once you've cleansed, it is time to rehydrate with a mask and pump your skin full of nutrients to keep it soft and happy! I'm loving products with hyaluronic acid lately. If I have some time to spare, I like to try a sheet mask for some well deserved 'me' time.

1. Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask (C$29.29)

2. Derma E Hydrating Mask with Hyaluronic Acid (C$28.99)

3. Garnier Nutrioniste Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Mask (C$19.99)

Step 3: Moisturize

Pre-makeup, it's time to moisturize. Before going for a cream, try using a facial oil. Think of your skin like a sponge. If you put a moisturizer on top without 'wetting the sponge', it doesn't absorb properly. If you apply oil first, then moisturize, it will help the moisturizer seep in and last longer.

1. NeoStrata Moisture Infusion 24 Hr Hydrating Serum (C$37.00)

2. Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil (C$50.00)

3. Kosmea Kosmea Skin Clinic Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil (C$49.99)

4. Bliss Triple Oxygen Ex-'glow'-sion! Vitabead-Infused Moisture Cream (C$64.00)

Have you recovered from New Years' Eve?

The idea of using facial oils for cleansing and moisturising really intrigues me. That Skin Essence Organics Facial In a Jar might be worth a try.

My new favorite thing added to my nightly routine if necessary is tea tree oil on acne. (Thanks for that tip!)
