Tipping 101

toniguy.jpgThere is nothing more awkward than fumbling with your wallet at the counter of a hair salon trying to figure out how much to give the stylist who cut your hair, the colorist, the guy who washed your hair and the girl who blow-dried it. Gee... got a calculator? What are the expectations and how much is reasonable to leave as a tip?

There are many differing opinions on this one. A friend of mine says she gives $5 to everyone who touches her hair. Another one says she gives a flat $20 each to her colorist and stylist but nothing to the assistants. I find this all confusing would welcome some guidance on this. While I don't want to end up doling out an additional $50 in tips every time I get my hair done, I would like to know I've left enough that I can look my stylist in the eye on my next visit.

According to TONI&GUY (Yorkville) owner, Clarissa Pupo, tipping is really up to the customer's discretion. However, she says most clients leave 10-15% of the bill or a flat $10-$20. It is also customary to leave $2 - $5 for the assistants who wash or blow-dry your hair.

For those who are still not inclined to leave anything, it is important to note that tips make up approximately 15-20% of the stylist's salary so be sure to give them some love.

I still leave 10-15% of total bill. Basically, however much the tax is, that's about how much I'm tipping.
