New Year's Resolution: Reward Myself More Often (for free, obviously)

For a girl who struggles over which variety of apples to buy at the supermarket, I'm not sure how I'm going to handle this. The time has come for me to choose where I'll redeem some of my hard earned points from my American Express ChoicePlus card.

This is no ordinary points Card. You earn points everywhere but get double points from 5 places of your choosing from over 100 merchants. When it comes to points redemption, they have a slew of options and this is where it gets really hard. Keep in mind I put everything on my credit card and then pay it off every month, so collecting a lot of points doesn't take long especially during the expensive Christmas holidays.  I think a little self-rewarding is in order, don't you?

Here are a few gift certificate options I'm noodling over:

O&B Restaurants
I love this restaurant chain. They have everything from stylishly low key to over the top gourmet.  A clear winner for a foodie like me.

Spa Finder
Does this really need an explanation?

Restoration Hardware
Despite all of the renos we did in 2011, my living room doesn't feel quite right. I think it's the furniture. I feel the decorating bug kicking in!

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts
I'm picturing a romantic weekend getaway with the husband. Valentine's Day is coming up!

Saks Fifth Avenue
Aside from being a glorious mecca of all things material, they carry my favourite perfume. Question: Would I still have to claim it at customs if I got it for free?

Of course I could be practical and use the points towards free gas at Esso or the Home Depot, but let's be honest. I'm not that practical.

Gift certificates aren't the only way to redeem points. You can choose specific items from the Choice by Membership Rewards collection like coffee makers, feather bedding, TVs or even snowshoes.

I'm curious: from the list of rewards here, which freebies would you choose?

@fredamans you are right! But if you are el-cheapo like me, you pay your balance off every month because you refuse to pay interest ;).

I always make off well from my credit cards, even with the annual fee. Most of my travel is covered by points. Now with this one, it can also be meals, clothes, furniture, gas... so I think if you pay off your balance each month you definitely do get a lot for free!

There is no such thing as free when dealing with a credit card.

The weekend away sounds absolutely awesome right about now! Gift cards are always great, too.
